The History of CD Projekt: Driven by Ambitions

With the release of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt has titled themselves as one of the most polarizing and amusing game developers out there. They had their highs with The Witcher Series and probably their low with Cyberpunk. CD Projekt has a very long history behind them filled with innovations, ambitions, and some flops as well. While most people may hate CD Projekt’s overconfidence with the premature release of Cyberpunk, they might have just not understood the full history of the company. CD Projekt is a company defined by its confidence, ambitions, and the drive to create something that has never been done before. To get a full picture of this, let’s look at their history, starting from their humble beginnings.

The Birth of CD Projekt

In 1994, Marcin Iwiński and Michał Kiciński formed the company that we now know as CD Projekt. Back then, they were not making games as we all know today. Instead, they were importing western games and selling them in the Polish market. Their main objective was to localize these games. Localizing is translating the games into the market’s language, which is Polish in their case. In the ’90s, the gaming market in Poland was still very small, let alone games with the Polish language. This was, in part, due to the only recent emergence of Poland from the socialist rule.

With their ambition, CD Projekt immediately filled the void and took advantage of it. They started by repacking the game with Polish boxes, titles, and manuals, so that Polish people are more incentivized to buy the games. They eventually moved on to fully localizing the games. The first game they fully localized was Ace Ventura. Later on, they managed to secure a deal with Interplay and BioWare for Baldur’s Gate. Fun fact, in the near future, BioWare was the one who helped CD Projekt build the engine used for the first Witcher game.

However, CD Projekt was not going to stay in the localizing business; they wanted to create their own game. Before doing this, Marcin and the whole team secured the license of a book that they are already passionate about Wiedźmin (Polish for Witcher). The road for creating the game was not at all easy for CD Projekt. They could not find a deal with any publisher and, thus, created their own by the name of CD Projekt Red. After five years of development, CD Projekt unraveled The Witcher series to the gaming world.

The Witcher was released in October of 2007 and immediately became a massive hit. It has a Metacritic score of 81 out of 100 and garnered many positive reviews. Indeed, this game is nothing when compared to the games CD Projekt released in later years. However, if you look at the context behind its success, this game is probably the one that impacts the company the most.

Firstly the RPG genre is still relatively new and hasn’t fully matured yet, so releasing this kind of game is already very ambitious. Secondly, they are competing with similar big-titled games such as Assassin’s Creed and God of War 2, both released in the same year. Being able to rival these titles alone is already very successful, especially being their first-ever game. Thirdly, The Witcher is a new and unknown series filled with brand-new combat mechanics that actually require players to think.

Those mechanics, of course, include the signs or the elements that players can select, each having its unique capabilities, strengths, and weaknesses. There are also different fighting styles, and potions you can create for seeing in the dark or regeneration. It is also one of the rare times, during those days, that we get to see a game that provides branching dialogue. This feature alone adds so much replay value to the game. From the get-go, you can see that CD Projekt is fueled with creativity and ambition to create a brand new game.

In 2011, CD Projekt released the second iteration of The Witcher series. Within four years, CD Projekt exponentially stepped up the series in a lot of areas. The combat experience was far more difficult than the first Witcher game. It was also, in my opinion, one of the more difficult RPGs of the era. I got hardstuck in this game far more times than other RPG games. The character leveling is also improved and gives players freedom of customization.

There are four upgrade paths which the players can choose and customize according to their own will, each with their own set of strengths. Similar to the first iteration, Witcher 2 incorporates branching dialogues. However, this time, the choices that players make actually determines the 16 different endings of the game. The graphics of Witcher 2 is also significantly improved – the details look sharper, and the effects look shinier. This was in part because of the different engine that was used to run Witcher 2 that allowed for smoother and higher quality gameplay.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3. Via: The Verge

The third iteration of The Witcher series was released in May 2015 and forever revolutionized the genre. Even until this day, it is still regarded as one of the best games ever created. The world in Witcher 3 is much more expensive to explore and is integrated with more advanced dynamic environments.

Players will need to use boats and horses to traverse around the world due to sheer size. There are also more quests and side quests that players can do. Both the large open-world and number of missions cause Witcher 3 to have the longest game length out of the previous iterations. Combine this fact with the 36 different endings of the game, you will never run out of gameplay material.

The skill tree or upgrade path is very similar to the second Witcher. However, the gameplay of Witcher 3 is exponentially improved. Sources say that Witcher 3’s combat is less clunky, delayed, and much smoother when compared to Witcher 2. Of course, you will also see a massive overhaul in the graphics. The overall project is far more ambitious than any other CD Projekt’s projects so far. It has been reported that the development budget was around USD 81 million, with over 1500 people working on the project.

After its release, the game was an immediate hit. Four million copies were sold in its first week and became first in the UK and Japanese video game charts. Approximately 50 million copies have been sold worldwide as of 2020.

Later in October, CD Projekt released their first-ever game expansion with the Hearts of Stone DLC. The May of next year, another DLC was released, this time called Blood and Wine. Both these two DLC’s add to the already massive success of the game. The Blood and Wine DLC won CD Projekt an award at The Game Awards 2016 for the best RPG game.

Gwent: The Witcher Card Game

In 2018, CD Projekt released a card game based on The Witcher series. The game was not too popular and successful as all the previous Witcher games. However, the project was meant to be small from the start, inferring from the small budget and number of people working on it. The game managed to be nominated for some awards, such as “Most Promising New eSports Game” at the 2019 SXSW Gaming Awards.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales

In the same year, CD Projekt released yet another card game. However, Thronebreaker solely focuses on the solo play or single-player mode rather than the multiplayer aspect of Gwent. The game comprises a 30-hour long campaign, with a similar overall style of gameplay with Gwent. Despite this, sources say that the game did not meet its sales expectation and was not too successful.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 jadi game pertama dengan concurrent players 1 juta pada hari pertama.
CD Projekt

I think we already knew what happened to this game. The teaser for Cyberpunk 2077 was released eight years ago in 2012 and has accumulated massive hype in the gaming community. The game, however, did not live up to its expectations. Cyberpunk 2077 is brimming with bugs and lousy NPC’s. Console players are ripped-off due to the game’s incompatibility. It will not take much effort to find an article explaining why the game is overrated and underwhelming.

Conclusion and the Future

Despite their failures, you really have to admire the ambition of CD Projekt for creating a game that is on the scale of Cyberpunk. There is a reason why there has been no game like Cyberpunk before: it is an immensely enormous, challenging, and risky project.

After all, you can already see that this theme shines in their vision throughout their history. They jumped on the Witcher series as their first-ever game and redefined the RPG genre. They moved out of their comfort zone and created a card game. Now, they undertook the largest project in game development history with Cyberpunk. Although Cyberpunk 2077 was a major flop in the industry, I think that CD Projekt can learn from their mistake with this game. The gaming industry needs developers like CD Projekt who are not afraid to go beyond their comfort zone and try something big and new. It is developers like these that allow gaming to continuously progress and advance in the future.

Top 10 Minecraft Mods You Need to Try

There are thousands of mods in Minecraft that have been created throughout its history. These mods range from simply modifying your interface to completely creating a whole new biome. Needless to say, picking the top 10 out of the supposed 55000 mods is very difficult. Mods that are on this list are usually either extremely popular, useful, or game-changing.

Optifine

Via: Shadermods
Via: Shadermods

Optifine is perhaps one of the most used utility mods in Minecraft. As a utility mod, this means that Optifine’s purpose is solely to enhance the gaming experience of Minecraft. It boosts the graphics by tweaking Minecraft’s lighting and rendering systems to increase their visibility. More importantly, it was intended to also boost the performance of the game, though the opposite might happen in some cases. Optifine is also needed if you want to use any sort of shaders. It also gives you extra options and controls for customization purposes which you can see on their Wiki page. Generally, there is really no reason why you should not download this mod.

WorldEdit

Via: Reddit
Via: Reddit

WorldEdit is a must-have mod if you love playing creative mode and doing large builds. It is also probably one of the most popular mods and building mods in all of Minecraft. The mod allows you to conveniently place, replace, or delete large batches of blocks. If you are like me, the most frustrating and boring section of a build is repetitively placing blocks across a large area. The process can take hours of mindless work. WorldEdit can do this work in a split second and save you a lot of time and sanity.

ComputerCraft

ComputerCraft
ComputerCraft

ComputerCraft is a mod that allows players to use and program computers and robots in their Minecraft world. The robots in ComputerCraft are called Turtles and are programmed through computers. The programming language used in the mod is the Lua programming language. I feel that this mod is the most impressive on this list. It creates a whole world of possibilities and automation in Minecraft. It also has the potential to teach players about the world of programming while playing Minecraft – killing two birds with one stone if you ask me. There is no denying that there is a learning curve for this mod, but there are plenty of guides out there to get you started with ComputerCraft.

Buildcraft and Thermal Expansion

I included these two mods together because they come hand in hand with each other. BuildCraft and Thermal Expansion are the OG’s when it comes to technology mods in Minecraft. Back in Minecraft 1.2, all the technology mod packs will always include these Buildcraft and Thermal Expansion. Since these 2 are technology mods, they add many new blocks and interactions that allow you to build a wide range of machines and automation devices. Both these mods are still in use and updated until this very day.

Better Portals

Via: Reddit
Via: Reddit

Better portals allow you to see the other side of the world through any portal, and without the need of entering the portal. The mod also removes the loading screen transition. This is perhaps the most straightforward and aesthetically pleasing mod on the list. It also adds another level of immersion when playing Minecraft. The mod really changes the experience you have when entering nether or end portals.

IndustrialCraft 2

IndustrialCraft 2 is another technology mod, similar to BuildCraft and Thermal Expansion. However, a major feature of IndustrialCraft that distinguishes itself from other tech mods is the nuclear reactors. Of course, with nuclear reactors comes nuclear bombs. Streamer Disguised Toast shows the power of the nuke by detonating it inside the OfflineTV Minecraft Server a couple of weeks ago, which creates a pretty spectacular scene. Allowing players to be a nuclear physicist and creating a weapon of mass destruction inside Minecraft puts this mod as one of the most interesting Minecraft Mods out there.

JourneyMap

Via: MinecraftSide
Via: MinecraftSide

JourneyMap is one of the oldest mods in Minecraft that is still widely used until this very day. The functionality of the feature it provides will greatly improve your Minecraft experience. Just like the name suggests, JourneyMap provides players with a map that maps your Minecraft world as you explore it. Keeping track of locations and their coordinates won’t be much of a hassle anymore with this mod. Note that the mod still needs to be personally configured to your own liking before it can be fully functional. The sheer usefulness and functionality of JourneyMap make it one of the best Minecraft mods.

Aether

Via: Curse Forge
Via: Curse Forge

Aether is one of the oldest and largest mods in all of Minecraft. It was released in 2011 and immediately rose to popularity in the community. It was so popular that people thought it was part of vanilla Minecraft. The Aether is a mod that adds a new realm called the Aether realm. Similar to all realms like The Nether, the Aether realm includes a wide variety of new mobs, blocks, and items. No other mods in Minecraft were able to be as well-built and large-scaled as Aether. The success of the Aether mod also prompted Mojang to hire its creator, kingbdogz, back in 2019.

Thaumcraft

Via: Reddit

Similar to all the technology mods that got mentioned above, there are also magic mods in Minecraft. The most popular magic mod of them all is Thaumcraft. Thaumcraft adds tons of new features such as alchemy, golemancy, and thaumaturgy. These new features will really take a lot of time to study. Most mod packs in Minecraft include Thaumcraft just because of its sheer magnitude, maybe even more than BuildCraft or Thermal Expansion.

Biomes o’plenty

If you are looking for a biome mod to add to Minecraft, I heavily suggest picking Biomes o’plenty. Biomes o’plenty is perhaps the best and most popular biome mods in Minecraft. As of writing this article, the mod adds an astounding amount of 60 biomes to the game. Moreover, these biomes also really look beautiful and are constantly updated.

PS5 vs Xbox Series X|S: What Could Microsoft Do to Win?

The console war continues in this latest console generation, PS5 vs Xbox Series X|S. So far, Sony still beats Microsoft as in previous generations. However, this 4th war is still at its beginning. Can Microsoft strikes significant blow later since it still has some few cards up its sleeves?

Let’s take a look back for a moment before we see if Xbox Series X|S really has a chance to shine.

1st-3rd Wars Between PlayStation vs Xbox

Microsoft entered the console war in 2001 when they released the first generation of Xbox. At this generation, Sony already had a strong advantage because they already reached the second iteration of PlayStation.

PS2, released in 2000, even becomes the bestselling consoles of all times with 157 million units sold worldwide at the time of writing — 20 years after it’s released.

I think one of the biggest reasons why PS2 became such a massive hit is because of the PSX (PS1) games. There are so many legendary games from PSX such as Suikoden 2, Legend of Dragoon, Resident Evil, Xenogears, FF VII, Twisted Metal 4, etc.

Surely, those games brought unforgettable memories which in turn built a great impression and brand image of PlayStation. No wonder the first Xbox couldn’t put up a fight.

2nd generation of Xbox, Xbox 360 (released in 2005) has been the most popular Xbox until today. Microsoft learned so many things with its previous generation console. Performance-wise, between PS3 and Xbox 360, both of them are pretty close — shown in the benchmark of GTA V and Red Dead Redemption by Digital Foundry.

Xbox 360 also played to its strength with the games. While PlayStation is always strong with its Japanese-style games, like JRPG, Xbox 360 caters to gamers with western taste.

This was the era when the sales number came so close between the two. Xbox 360 has sold 85.50 million as of November 2020. Meanwhile, PS3 has sold 86.90 million. Besides Microsoft did right with 360, Sony was slipping with their PS3.

Sadly, the 3rd gen, Xbox One took a dive. There are numerous reasons why Xbox One became such a failure. First, while Sony kept focusing its PlayStation 4 to become a better gaming machine, Microsoft went too wide with very poor execution. Xbox One was also made to become a media hub, but it’s a disaster for the Asian market. There were so many contents provided in Xbox One couldn’t be viewed outside the US.

On the other side, PS4 brought so many amazing exclusive games such as God of War, Days Gone, Uncharted 4, Marvel’s Spiderman, Ghost of Tsushima, or The Last of Us.

Besides that, Nintendo was back into the action with its Switch in this generation. Previously, Nintendo was left far behind with Wii U which offers nothing in terms of unique value. However, with Switch, I do believe it offers a much distinctive feature than all of the consoles ever made by allowing it to be a handheld gaming device.

PS5 VS XBOX Series X|S

No matter you admit it or not, performance has been a crucial factor for a gaming machine — more so in the last decades when games become more demanding. On paper, Xbox Series X should be more powerful than PS5. However, in reality, game tests show PS5 outperforming Xbox Series X.

According to Digital Foundry, besides having more GPU performance (Xbox Series X with 12 teraflops compared with 10.28 on the PS5), Microsoft’s console has higher memory bandwidth and more compute units.

In Devil May Cry 5, for example, X Series X gives a slightly better performance in 4K and ray tracing. Yet, with high frame rate mode, PS5 runs noticeably better. It’s the same story with Assasin’s Creed Valhalla because this game produces a lot of screen tearing and regular drops below 60 fps on Xbox Series X.

Dirt 5 and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War also produces similar benchmark results between the two consoles.

An article from the Verge argues that it’s because the game developers have spent more time working on PS5 rather than on Xbox Series X. Microsoft spokesperson also gave a statement in that article.

“We are aware of performance issues in a handful of optimized titles on Xbox Series X|S and are actively working with our partners to identify and resolve the issues to ensure an optimal experience. As we begin a new console generation, our partners are just now scratching the surface of what next-gen consoles can do and minor bug fixes are expected as they learn how to take full advantage of our new platform. We are eager to continue working with developers to further explore the capability of Xbox Series X|S in the future.”

I do think it makes sense since game development plays a crucial part in deciding the game’s performance. However, it remains to be seen if Microsoft could finally push the performance update fast enough.

Besides graphic and performance, the games library available to the gaming machine is also important or even could be said as the most significant factor. That’s the biggest advantage PS4 has over Xbox One. Sony surely wants to do the same strategy with PS5. However, this time, Microsoft already prepares well.

The Outer World. Credit: Obsidian.

Microsoft now owns so many prominent game developers such as Obsidian, Bethesda, id Software, Arkane Studios, Machine Games, Ninja Theory, and the others that are too many to be mentioned here.

So far, PS5 defeated Xbox Series S and X on sales numbers too, at least according to the estimation done by VGChartz. About 2.1 to 2.5 million units of PS5 were sold globally on its two launch days. On the other hand, Xbox Series X and S were estimated 1.2 – 1.4 million units sold.

Could Microsoft Actually Win the Console War This Time?

Nothing is impossible, I guess. For so many years, Intel dominated the PC gaming market over AMD. Now, AMD is the favourite for the PC gamer. However, there is a big hurdle for Microsoft to beat Sony in this generation. Time is the essence. How fast can Microsoft push the performance update and its game developers under Xbox Games Studios?

I think time is not on its side, yet. Because those 2 keys are not entirely up to Microsoft. Game developers need time to ensure their games could utilize stronger hardware on Xbox Series X. Surely, Microsoft couldn’t rush the game developers under Xbox Game Studios too to create great games. You just can’t rush perfection. Unless Microsoft wants a similar disaster to CD Projekt with its Cyberpunk 2077.

Despite that challenge, while Microsoft is waiting, I think there are few things it could do to improve the chances.

Sumber: PC Gamer
Credit: PC Gamer

First, Microsoft has full access to the most popular operating system in PC gaming — Windows. Implementing cross-platform multiplayer between those two on all available games on both platforms is surely an interesting take. Integrating more connections between those platforms could make both platforms so much more interesting. For example, our Xbox game library could be accessed and played on PC or vice versa. Cloud-save between two platforms is also really beneficial for both.

Speaking of Windows and PC gaming, I honestly believe the worst thing Microsoft could do is discriminating against PC gamers for the sake of their Xbox players — like pushing Xbox Games Studios to make Xbox only games (unavailable on PC). Microsoft could gain profits from services too, not just by selling Xbox hardware. Xbox content and services grew 65% year-over-year ($1.2 billion), inclusive of games sales and subscriptions.

Second, Microsoft could also do more to penetrate some regions, like Southeast Asia. It’s true that mobile gaming dominates the region but still, I believe the number of console gamers could be bigger if Microsoft put more efforts. Because, apparently, Sony is not really into this region too. Rather than competing in Japan, where it’s almost impossible to win, I think Microsoft has a bigger chance in Southeast Asia if they really want it.

Finally, I think Sony is a really hard competitor to beat. It’s going to take a long time and big innovative efforts on Microsoft’s part. However, Microsoft already has 3 keys: better hardware with its current gaming machine, good ecosystem and access with PC gaming, and prominent game developers under its wings. It’s really up to Microsoft if it could play those 3 cards really well.

First Impression Cyberpunk 2077: Too Much Expectation Will Kill You

After 4 delays, Cyberpunk 2077 was finally released on 10 December 2020. This game is, literally, the most anticipated game ever so far.

On its release date, a million people played Cyberpunk 2077. Keep in mind, it is a single-player game. There are only 3 games in Steam that have higher peak concurrent players than Cyberpunk 2077 to this date, and all of them are multiplayer games: PUBG, CS: GO, and Dota 2. Cyberpunk 2077 also becomes the fastest-selling games of all time. It manages to garner 8 million pre-orders on all platform — 74% were for the digital version. 59% for the PC platform.

Despite those staggering numbers, there are a lot of problems haunt this game. I have been playing this game for 20 hours. Surely, that playtime is not enough to do a review. But, I think it’s enough for me to write my first impression of this game.

Before we dig deeper, I have to say that I am a big fan of CD Projekt. The Witcher 3 is one of my favourite games ever, along with Skyrim, Pillars of Eternity 1 & 2, and Mass Effect trilogy. I also have finished more than 2000 PC games that have a single-player campaign since 2003.

With that being said, let’s discuss this game.

Bugs Fest and Anxiety-inducing Performance

Those are the first two things that come to mind when I remember Cyberpunk 2077. My PC is not high-end by today’s standard, but it’s not that miserable either.

This is my spec:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600
Motherboard: GIGABYTE AB-350 Gaming 3
GPU: Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JS
Memory: G Skill 16GB 3200MHz.
Storage: ADATA SX8200 PCIe SSD 1TB
Monitor: ASUS VG258QR (@144Hz)

With that spec above, I could get a good max framerate at 116 fps. Sadly, the minimum framerate is too pathetic for my spec with only at 40fps no matter what my game settings are (excluding Ray Tracing setting) — since I have never experienced this with other recent games.

Turns out, it is because the game couldn’t utilize our CPU optimally. Fortunately, I play on the best gaming platform ever. PC Master Race FTW! UnhingedDoork on Reddit pointed out that we can modify the game so it could make use of our CPU better. I use the .dll version here, and it solves the anxiety-inducing performance problem.

Sadly, even if I could finally play the game as smooth as RDR2 or AC: Odyssey (albeit lower min fps) with the unofficial patch, there are so many bugs lurking in the game.

With so many bugs this game has, Cyberpunk 2077 becomes an ample inspiration for meme makers.

If you ask me, I could stand the bugs considering that I am also a big fan of Bethesda games… LOL… I haven’t found any game-breaking bug either. Most of them are graphical glitches and AI problems on some occasions. However, if we are talking about its performance, it really upsets me. It makes me question my decision on spending most of my salary upgrading my PC for years.

However, taking into account that CD Projekt has to work on 5 platforms (PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S) in the midst of a pandemic, I’ll reserve my judgement while waiting on how fast it could solve all of the problems.

Too Much Expectation Definitely Hurts

Bugs and performance problems aside, I do think the game doesn’t meet my previous expectation. The Witcher 3 is truly a masterpiece. Therefore, I was hoping this game could at least deliver the same level of experience.

Sadly, even with all of the previous problems sorted out, I couldn’t see how this game could be at the same level as The Witcher 3. I’d like to be proven wrong though as I haven’t played the game as much as TW3. But, so far, I am pessimistic.

I am not saying this is a bad game. It has an interesting premise on its plot. I also enjoy the way it delivers its storyline, including the characters, setting, voice acting, etc. However, TW3 has the best storytelling aspect compared to all of the games that I play so far. It is certainly difficult for any games to deliver the same experience in that matter, including Cyberpunk 2077.

The Witcher 3
The Witcher 3

How about gameplay? Even though it uses a first-person perspective, the shooting aspect is mediocre at best. Shooting in Borderlands 3 feels more satisfying. Melee? Since it’s first-person, the animation is minimal — unlike TW3 which has fluid animations and battle. Quickhacking that is supposed to be magic equivalent in this game doesn’t feel powerful either. Geralt’s Signs, Quen, Igni, Aard, are sooooo much better.

V’s skill trees don’t offer interesting game-changing mechanic too. I also haven’t found a game-changing mechanic from equipment options — just stats increase. The only game-changing effects that I already found come in the form of Cyberware such as bionic legs that can give you double jumps or gorilla hands that allow us to punch like a truck and force open locked doors.

Via: Reddit
Via: Reddit

Another thing that I don’t like is too much randomness in equipment and loots. In the game that tries to be stylish and fashionable, I have a character that looks like a futuristic hobo because I prioritize on its stats. Maybe I am a bit bias here because I just revisited Monster Hunter World where it has layered armor and layered weapon features.

Driving in this game is also a torture. It’s so much worse compared to GTA V in the driving aspect.

Closing

Bug fixes and performance patches will surely come, sooner or later. From the storytelling aspect, I just hope I haven’t found the best part yet. However, gameplay-wise, I’m not sure it will be improved by a lot later.

There is an ideal solution though — at least for the PC players. That solution is a modding tool. Skyrim was definitely worse than Cyberpunk 2077 in terms of bugs at first. That’s why there is a comprehensive bug-fixing mod for the game, and most players (including me) use it. Besides that, because Skyrim is very friendly for the modding community, they could help to fix the bugs or even improve the gameplay so much more. The Witcher 3 is also friendly in terms of modding. That’s why, I do really hope the modding community and CD Projekt can continue that tradition. Better yet, CD Projekt could also take one step further by providing a comprehensive modding tool. It needs all the help to save its own face for further embarassments.

Last but not least, I want to say something regarding the controversy of this game. Some people argue that it’s because of the shareholders who push CD Projekt to release the game even though it’s not ready. Some people say it’s because of greed. Honestly, I am not sure if that’s true or false but, one thing for sure, creating a masterpiece is not something you could do every time you want it.

Not all of Tolkien’s works are on the same level as The Lord of the Rings. It’s also the case with other creative products, from music, film, games, paintings, etc. The Witcher 3 is amazing in so many aspects. There is no doubt about that for so many players. It launches CD Projekt to a whole new level. But, it also sets the standard really high.

The Importance of Education from a PhD Holder Esports Player

Every time I was invited to talk about esports in a school or university, there was always one question asked. “Which one is more important? Academic or non-academic pursuit?”

Before I give my answer at the end of this article, I want to emphasize how important that question is — considering only a few people could even reach that stage. Nowadays, most of the young people in the gaming community or even the general population underestimate the importance of education. Usually, their line is like this: “even Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, or the others could be successful without an academic degree.”

That’s why I contacted Dr Yew Weng Kean. In case you didn’t know, as far as I know, he’s the only esports player with a PhD title at the time of this writing (November 2020). He is an electrical engineering PhD holder who won a gold medal in SEA Games 2019 for Hearthstone. He is living proof that gamers are not always ignorant of education. He is also the argument on how you could achieve success in academic and non-academic pursuit.

A post shared by Syed Saddiq (@syedsaddiq)

This is my interview with him:

Hybrid (H): Hearthstone requires deeper thinking than some other fast-paced games (which requires more in reflex, eye-to-hand coordination, etc.). How do you think cognitive capabilities could be translated into better performance in those games?

Dr Yew (Y): Cognitive abilities can be applied to any competitive esports. Eg. Strategic planning can be applied in the drafting phase of MOBA games. Even during the game itself, we got to be able to think critically to outplay the opponents. This can be done when considering the item build of the hero for MOBA games or simply countering opponent’s important territories in shooting games.

H: I think education could also be a backup plan for pro players, for those who can’t play in the pro scene anymore (for any reason). What do you think about the importance of education for pro players?

Y: Regardless of the sport that you choose, may it be esports or traditional sports, I believe that education should always be a priority as it provides a solid fallback plan after the end of your esports career. Compared to before, esports is now getting some recognition from universities. Like traditional sports, there is a big opportunity in America and Europe for pro players to represent varsities in national leagues while also obtaining a fully funded sponsorship for their education. The average age of esports players is between 18-30, where they are at their prime especially for fast-paced games which require quick reflexes.

Via: Redbull
Via: Redbull

H: Practicing for the pro players requires a lot of time. What is your strategy or suggestions on time management? To manage the focus and time between education and practice?

Y: My suggestion would be, first of all, to pick only one game that you are good at. This is because you cannot expect to become pro in every game that you play. Hence, this allows you to focus well on that particular game, what are the technical skills required, what is the best strategy currently and which aspect of the game you are doing well and which aspects you can improve. You can also apply this in your education as well, where it is better to study one subject at a time and understanding which part you are doing well and which part you can improve upon. Time management is an important aspect as well to ensure that you are able to allocate some hours for study and for gaming every day but I would say the quality of those hours are even more crucial to ensure that you continue progressing in all the aspects that you are working on.

H: On what age should people practice to become a pro player? If we look at traditional sports, most people start practising from an early age. However, in esports, the game itself might not survive that long.

Y: Firstly, the early age should be used to develop the motor skills first, figuring out what is the player’s strengths and weakness. Some kids are able to identify their talents in their early age. For example, the youngest chess world champion at the age of 22, Magnus Carlsen was able to pick up chess at the age of 5 and compete in a tournament at the age of 8. But there are some as well who started late and was able to be successful as well. Hakeem Olajuwon, Pascal Siakam, Anthony Davis are some of the names of NBA players who picked up the sport later on in their teens but still managed to become a professional NBA player and went on to win an NBA championship. So if you know where your strength lies, you would be able to find a sport or esport that you are passionate enough to succeed in it.

Back to the first question I mentioned earlier, which one is more important? Academic or non-academic pursuit? Other questions related to this topic have been answered delicately by Dr Yew.

My answer, both of them are equally important. Students who only seek academic pursuit usually have fewer friends and less diverse experiences. Friends and diverse experiences could help to boost your chances to success — since I believe there is no sure thing in life

More friends will introduce you to more opportunities. Also, no matter how smart you are, you need other people to help you. Diverse experiences, on the other hand, could bring out your uniqueness compared to the others. I am a strong believer that richness in perspectives could make you a better and happier person.

However, education that could train our analytical thinking or cognitive abilities will work wonders combined with our social skills and richness in perspectives.

Want to Work in the Esports, Where to Start?

In the past, being a professional player meant that you would only get income from the tournament prizes you won. Now, that is no longer the case. Just like corporate slaves, professional gamers also get a monthly salary. The salaries of Mobile Legends Professional League Indonesia players even exceed the Jakarta Regional Minimum Wage. If you are interested in becoming a professional player, there are a number of things you can do to attract well-known esports organizations.

However, esports has become trillions of rupiah worth of industry. Jobs in this industry are not limited to being a professional player. There are various other jobs you can do if you want to enter the esports industry, such as becoming a caster, joining an esports tournament organizer, or esports media. What do you need before applying to an esports company?

Oh yeah, before that, we’ve also written about the ideal age to get into esports – either as a pro player or other worker.

Need to have a diploma?

“You don’t need to have a degree in esports,” said Adam Baugh, Marketing & Community Specialist, Andbox in a webinar held by the General Assembly on Friday, July 10, 2020. “But, do you need a bachelor’s degree? It depends. Based on my experience, having a bachelor’s degree is indeed useful, but the most important thing is that you have experiences in the field of esports.” He explained. You can show off the abilities you have in your portfolio.

Meanwhile, according to Irliansyah Wijanarko, Chief Growth Officer, RevivaLTV, whether or not a diploma is needed depends on the position you are applying for. “For positions in front of the screen, such as pro players, live streamers, influencers, hosts, and so on, of course, you don’t need a diploma. What needed are skills related to their fields, such as public speaking, acting, entertaining, and others,” He said when contacted by Hybrid via short message. “However, for the position behind the scenes, especially management, our industry has advanced. Two or three years ago, maybe you could join in the management field on the basis of helping friends or having a passion for esports and eager to learn. Now, the requirements are getting higher.”

Gisma “Melondoto” Priayudha has the same opinion. “When I first started, there wasn’t any requirement related to an educational degree. It came from passion then become a business. For now, at least S1 or D3,” He said. “The majors taken can be various, ranging from design, management, communication, to business. You see, in the future, if there are esports activists who have such educations, it also will be good for esports itself. ”

Meanwhile, according to Reza Ramadhan, Head of Broadcast and Content, Moonton Indonesia, a diploma is still important when you are applying for a job at an esports company. “Because there are still many companies that make a bachelor’s degree as one of the requirements for hiring,” He admitted. “However, there are also some companies that really care about a diploma. Just yeah, it depends. For me, the diploma is important, especially if you want your career to continue to rise. One day, surely a diploma will definitely become a requirement.”

Portfolios and Social Media

Regarding portfolios, Irli, Melon, and Reza have the same opinion: portfolios are important. They also explained, the type of portfolio you need before applying for a job in the world of esports depends on the type of job you are applying for.
“There are various kinds of portfolios, it can be from handling esports events or you can also write about esports,” said Reza. “Again, it really depends on what fields are you interested in because there are a lot of jobs in esports. There are media, event organizers or publishers. As long as you are good in that specific scope, one day someone will notice and your value will increase.”

In line with Reza, Irli explained that a portfolio can be proof that a person can do a task well. “For example, someone who applies as a content creator, but their social media is not updated and there is no portfolio in making videos or making scenarios, how can we be sure that they can handle their job well?” Said Irli.

“It’s 2020. Everyone, regardless of what job he is applying for, will definitely need a portfolio,” said Irli. He takes streamers as examples. The skill of a streamer is usually seen from the number of views and comments on the video. Not only that, but people also pay attention to the content it uploads or the way the streamer “sells” their brand.

In the highlight of this Instagram video, I try to teach how to sell,” said Irli. “Is the content perfect? Nope. However, simple content like that can show someone’s characteristics. The way he speaks. Does he use colourful fonts? Does he understand what he is describing? Can he give a brief, concise, and clear explanation?”

Just like a streamer, a shoutcaster can also make videos as a portfolio. “The caster portfolio now is simple: the important thing is to have a YouTube channel and casting some events,” said Melon. “Several things that are assessed are the voice, manner, and the entertainment offered.” He revealed that social media can also be a portfolio for a caster. “For example, if he has a lot of video viewers, but his presence in social media is passive, it can be dangerous for casters.”

Melon explained that building a fan base on social media can help a caster develop his career. For example, when someone is asked to be a caster, he or she can also offer social media services for an extra fee. Not only that, but it is also possible that a company wants its brand to be endorsed through the caster’s social media. To build followers on social media, Melon revealed, a caster could take advantage of the crowd at the events he participated in.

Unfortunately, social media does not always have a positive impact. If you’re not careful, you can actually make some companies lose their interests. According to Irli, there are five things that companies pay attention to from the applicant’s social media, namely the applicant’s reaction to an event, lifestyle, views on religion/politics/racial issues, interaction with the audience, and whether the applicant’s style matches the company.

Sumber: Reddit
Be careful using social media | Source: Reddit

“In the end, if the recruiter can see these things on the applicant’s social media, everyone can also see it, including companies, partners and audiences,” said Irli. Like it or not, how a person represents himself on social media will be linked to the company where he works. So, don’t be surprised if you see someone getting fired because they posted silly content on social media. For example, in June 2020, a professional player was banned from participating in the Capcom Pro Tour for life for making racist comments on Twitter.

Building Relationships

Just like any other industry, building relationships is also important in the esports industry. Adam advised not to be afraid of start talking with esports practitioners. “You also have to support the local esports scene,” he said. He believes, taking an active role in local esports events will make it easier for you to meet and make connections with people who are in the field of esports.
Adam’s words were shared by Sandra Chen, Digital Content Manager, Team Liquid. She shared her personal experience, how she started building connections by attending offline esports events. “After that, I can do digital networking,” she said. She gave an example of how to build relationships online: if you take seminars or webinars related to esports, you can contact the resource person via social media.

Sandra encourages someone who is interested in working in the world of esports to do a little research before applying for a job. “You can also actively contact the companies you are interested in. The worst thing that could happen is that they don’t answer,” she said.

How to Look Unique?

In February 2020, the Hitmarker, an esports job site, issued a report stating that job vacancies in esports rose 87% throughout 2019 when compared to 2018. Along with the esports has become increasingly popular, more and more people are interested in getting into esports. Then, how can you stand out?

According to Sandra, creativity is one of the most important things that can be owned by someone who is already working in the industry or interested in getting into esports. “Many people in the esports ecosystem have the same idea, making them do the same thing,” said Sandra. So, according to her, someone will stand out if he can come up with new, unique ideas. In addition, considering that the esports industry is still relatively young, there is no surefire method that is guaranteed to be successful. That way, the people who can come up with new, unique ideas will stand out.

When asked about the most sought-after characteristics of workers in the world of esports, Reza answered, “The most important thing is a strong desire to learn and to think. Esports is something new. So, you have to be willing to continue to learn because the industry continues to grow and there are many things that don’t have benchmarks. So, there are still so many innovations to be explored.” Meanwhile, to be successful in the world of esports, he suggested, “do good and good will come to you.”

For Irli, one of the characteristics that people in this industry must have is curiosity. “Always craving for something new. Want to do something, want to learn, dares to experiment. Dare to take risks and be responsible for the decisions taken,” he said. Esports workers also need various soft skills, such as leadership, communication, time management, and discipline. “Discipline is very important because many people still think that working in esports is like a dream job where you can just relax while playing games,” he said.

For a caster or talent, one of the important characteristics that must be possessed is the ability to adapt. “Talent usually follows the market, what’s trending, follow it,” said Melon. “Next, have collaborations with talents or YouTubers or other celebrities. So, don’t just stay idle and go nowhere. For example, try to be a caster for different games.” He then gave an example when several casters from PC games switched to mobile games, such as Riantoro “Pasta” Yogi and Florian “Wolfy” George at PUBG Mobile, Frans Volva Riyando in Mobile Legends and Rere “Bredel” Bintoro in Point Blank and Mobile Legends.

Challenges and Stigma in the World of esports

If you want to work in the esports industry, of course, you should know about games. However, that doesn’t mean you can play games all day long. Esports also has its own challenges. According to Reza, the biggest challenge working in esports is how fast the industry is developing.

“Prior to esports, I worked in the IT industry. The trait is the same, people who are slow will be left behind,” he said. “In esports, we are required to be fast and precise in everything since the world is rapidly developing and competitive. So, you have to keep up to date with what’s happening and never be lazy to learn.”

Even though the esports industry is still relatively young, there is already a stigma around the people who work in it. One of them is that the jobs of people who work here are just playing games. “People think it’s a piece of cake. Just create content, get money, hang out, play games, get money. In fact, we are working really hard,” said Irli. He also shared that there are people who think lightly. “Some say, ‘I have a passion, I want to work in esports.’ It doesn’t work that way.”

However, Irli said, there is also a positive stigma about people working in esports. One of the positive stigmas is that people who are successful in the world of esports are considered “cooler” than people who are successful in other industries. “Why? Because the esports industry is still very new, “he said. That means people who work in this industry do “start from scratch”.

Conclusion

Jobs in esports are not limited to professional players. There are a variety of other jobs you can take on, whether in front of the screen, such as a caster or streamer, or behind the scenes, such as videographer or being part of an event organizer. Unfortunately, working in the world of esports doesn’t mean you just play games all day long. Just like when you work in other fields, you must meet some requirements set by the industry.

So, are you still interested in working in the world of esports?

What’s the Right Age to Get into Esports?

I can honestly say from the beginning of this article that I really don’t like the definite answers to these kinds of questions, because usually, this type of question is related to the realm marriage.

However, I firmly believe that there are no stupid questions (only ignorant and oversimplified answers) so these questions are perfectly legitimate. Plus, this article might help to answer those who are confused about when is the right time to start getting into esports.

In this article, I will also divide it into two parts. The reason is, having a career in esports can be divided into 2 major aspects: being an esports athlete or having a career as a professional in esports industry (such as being a manager, graphic designer, journalist, video editor, league ops, event organizer, etc.).

As always, I have to say that this article is my opinion based on my own experience and observations. So, as a form of justification, playing games has been my main hobby since my 4th-grade elementary school until now and I have been involved in the gaming industry as a full-time journalist since I graduated from college in 2008. The gaming philosophy has even become my life philosophy until today.

So without further ado, let’s discuss together the right age to get into esports.

The ideal age to become a pro player in esports

Considering that the answer is more complex than being other workers in the esports industry, we will discuss the age of being a pro player in esports first.

In fact, experience is the biggest determinant of our skills – whatever they may be – including our gaming skills. If we look at expertise from other domains, we will see many experts have been learning since they were a child.

From the realm of music, the world-class legendary bassist, Victor Wooten, started learning music even at a very young age. You can see the story in the video below.

Echa Soemantri, one of the best Indonesian drummers (in my opinion), also has started learning to play the drums since he was a child. I am sure you can also mention a story that is not much different from other musicians whose abilities are far above the average of other professional musicians.

The realm of sports? We often find similar stories. According to a report from The Economist, China even recruits certain children to be included in the training of Olympic athletes from an early age.

Can the same thing be applied to gaming skills? For example, giving as much game time as possible to children who are still in elementary school. It’s possible, of course. Although, it’s not ideal.

First, when compared to music and sports, the games probably won’t last that long. Think of it this way. If you have been practising playing guitar or badminton since the age of 5-7, for example, chances are guitar and badminton will still exist even when you turn 40.

However, I can’t say the same for specific games. Dota 2 for example. Several years ago, its esports scene was the most popular in Indonesia. What about now? It could be the case with MLBB, PUBG M, and Free Fire. Currently, the three of them still dominate the esports ecosystem in Indonesia. What about 20 years later? Will Mobile Legends survive with its esports ecosystem? Will PUBG M or Free Fire retain their popularity in 20 years?

The gaming industry will survive until my child becomes a grandparent. However, it is not certain that the same game title will last that long. Whereas when we talk about the ability to play at a professional level it is very specific. This means that if you are good at playing badminton, you will not automatically be good at playing tennis or table tennis – even though they look similar.

Top-class musicians are actually almost always guaranteed to be able to play more than one musical instrument, but only one instrument is their mainstay.

For example, Michael Jordan is inarguably the most legendary basketball player of all time. However, when he switched to golf, he still couldn’t reach the same level as Tiger Woods. Likewise with Victor Wooten. Most likely, he can also play the drums or piano but not at the level of his skills when playing bass.

It’s also the case with our gaming skills. I know there are players like Ryan “supernayr” Prakasha or Rivaldi “R7” Fatah who are good at more than 1 game. However, in fact, most Dota 2 players from Indonesia are not that easy to move to MOBA on mobile. No other pro player can cross genres (MOBA, FPS, Battle Royale) like supernayr.

That’s the reason why it’s not ideal to practice in one game since childhood. Because the game industry is more dynamic and the adaptability of our abilities is not that high.

On the other hand, I’m not prohibiting serious training in one game since childhood or adolescence. In my opinion, serious practice to play games also has a positive value as long as the time management is good.

Sumber: Aerowolf
Source: Aerowolf

For me, time allocation is more important than the age question. Talking about time allocation, there are stories from 2 pro players that make sense to consider. The story comes from Baskoro “roseau” Dwi Putra and Jason “f0rsaken” Susanto. Both of them are from the CS: GO Indonesia scene, which used to be quite large but slowly dying.

Roseau, when he was playing for NXL, told me that he got his bachelor degree and international esports title in the same year. Meanwhile, Jason was 13 years old when he played for Aerowolf. He admitted that he was allowed to play for his team (by his parents) if his school grades didn’t fall apart.

Those stories make more sense to me. Because they don’t sacrifice all their time to practice especially considering the current condition of the CS: GO esports scene in Indonesia.

Again, in my opinion, age is not a relevant consideration to get into esports as a pro player – unless maybe you are too old. More relevant considerations, are you able to manage your time and priorities allocation or is there someone else (such as your parents) who can do it for you?

Why? Because the Indonesian esports scene is still very dynamic. I also see a lot of former Indonesian pro players who can’t move on when the ecosystem is barren. In my opinion, the ideal story of a former esports player comes from Ariyanto “Lakuci” Sony. In DotA, he’s the best player from Indonesia. However, after he hung the mouse, he is successful in his business.

I know it’s easier said than done. But at least, in my opinion, every pro player (or anyone who wants to be) should have a long-term post-retirement plan.

Again, I’m not suggesting anyone stop playing games since childhood. To this day, I am still playing games until morning. I also love to see my kid playing Minecraft every day. However, it doesn’t make any sense to sacrifice everything to practice and make gaming your only life skill.

The ideal age for a career in the esports industry

For me, the answer to this question is much easier to present.

There are several reasons why this question is easier to answer. First, you can’t just rely on your passion for gaming if you want to be successful in esports or gaming industry.

Your passion is still valuable but you still need the required skills for your main job. For example, no matter how passionate you are, you are not suitable to be a graphic designer in the esports industry if you can’t crop hair in Photoshop.

You also need the required skills to be a writer or journalist in games or esports. If you don’t truly comprehend the concept of language units such as letters, words, sentences, and also paragraphs, for me, you are not suitable to be a writer or journalist in this industry.

Dokumentasi: Herry Wijaya
Documentation: Herry Wijaya

Other jobs in esports also have its requirements. You have to understand broadcasting, organizing events, or all kinds of fundamentals if you want to be a decent esports event organizer.

Second, cognitive capabilities are more important for the industry — unlike being a pro player who needs to emphasize their physical abilities (muscles memory and high reflexes). Cognitive abilities can be adapted to other industries. For example, like the graphic designer earlier, your capability to crop hair in Photoshop will still be useful in other industries outside of esports.

At least, that cognitive abilities of professional workers are easier to adapt to other industries – if the esports industry in Indonesia collapses, so you can find works anywhere else.

For that reason, honing your cognitive skills can actually be done as early as possible. For example, I have been interested in writing and language since elementary school until today. Another example, for those who are interested in photography, video, or graphic design, understanding composition, colour, perspective, and all kinds of things, in my opinion, can be learned since our childhood.

However, if you are still in school (or college), you should not abandon that too. Only because of your obligation to your parents.

Closing

Finally, I do believe that being a professional in this esports industry is better for the long term, compared to be an esports player.

Sumber: dbltap.com
Sumber: dbltap.com

Being a pro player requires a combination of your cognitive ability to understand the game with your physical abilities (muscle memory, reflexes, eye and hand coordination, etc.). No matter how good you calculate DPS or other calculations, it will be useless for a pro player if you can’t react as quickly as possible during battle. That physical ability is not easy to be adapted to other games. If you’re good playing drums, it doesn’t mean you will be decent playing guitar.

Because of that, if we go back to our main question, the answer could be very different. So, what is the right age to get into esports?

If you want to become a pro player, in my opinion, there is no ideal age until you prepare a backup plan after retiring. Unless if you really don’t care about your life after retirement.

On the other hand, if you want to be a professional in the esports industry, you could start as early as possible — as long as you still have to carry out obligations towards your parents who have worked hard to raise you…

What is a Clutch Moment in Esports?

For you who like to consume gaming content may have heard or seen the term “Clutch Moment”. Roughly interpreted, a clutch moment is an extraordinary event that can unexpectedly occur in a game. In the FPS game, for example, the 1vs5 moment was won by the one player. Or if in a MOBA game, stealing a large objective monster like Lord, Roshan/Aegis, or Baron alone, can be called a clutch moment.

How could that happen? Some say the clutch moment is just luck. That opinion may not be wrong, but that does not mean it is completely correct. Even though the term clutch moment is often circulating in the gaming community, this phenomenon and the term actually started from a sports competition. Because the clutch concept has been around for a long time, so many researchers are trying to explain why an athlete can sometimes move or react more than a normal human being, in a pinched state.

Let’s discuss more deeply about the clutch moment, starting from the meaning of the word, how this phenomenon occurs in sports and esports, to the debate in determining the clutch moment.

What Is Clutch Moment

In terms of language, the Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word “clutch” in several ways. The most important meaning is to hold something in hand, or by pinching it firmly, tightly, or suddenly. But that’s not what we’re looking for. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary also defines a clutch as successfully doing something in a crucial situation.

In esports, one of the most familiar moments for Indonesian esports audiences is probably the bright moments in Dota 2. Do you remember the origin of the words “patience from Zhou”? This moment is quite old because it happened in Dota 2 The International 2012, during Navi’s match against IG.

Apakah lemparan 3-poin yang masuk di akhir quarter 4 selalu bisa dikatakan sebagai Clutch? Sumber: Twitter NBA
Source: Twitter @NBAcom

At minute 17, IG tried to do a smoke gank towards Dendi and his friends who were hanging out on Lower Lane. Zhou, an IG player, managed to capture five Navi players. They were made motionless, all the heroes of the Navi team could not move, fell asleep because they were hit by the Song of the Siren. Normally, this fight should be won by IG, right? They just need to prepare their position and use all their skills to destroy the Hero from the Navi team.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t the case. In a state of turmoil, Faith was too hasty to let Ravage go. Dendi and LightofHeaven take the situation. Dendi and Rubick fled using Force Staff, LightofHeaven and Enigma used BKB and took out a Black Hole to catch 3 IG players. Dendi, who is released from the chaos, steals Ravage and uses it to destroy the IG team hero. As a result, Navi survived, while IG wasn’t.

Was this phenomenon called clutch moment? Or just luck? One thing for sure, do not equate The International stage with your experience when playing MMR. In this situation, the pressure came from various sides, whether it was the fear of defeat, the nervousness of competing on a grand stage, the noise of the audience, and various other factors, affecting the player’s mind.

Although, when you think about it logically, what Dendi and LightofHeaven did was actually easy. Just pressed BKB quickly, then hit Dark Hole. Dendi was also facing out when the turmoil occurred. So, he just hastily presses Force Staff, uses Spell Steal on Tidehunter, then Ravage.

But under such stressful circumstances, logic seems invalid, making easy tasks unthinkable. Do not believe it? Just look at the IG team. As professional players, they should be responsive to the smallest information. But in fact, IG might forget that there are BKB, Force Staff, and their positions are too tight which makes it an easy target for the Dark Hole.

Turning to the fighting game scene, one of the most iconic clutch moments of all time is Evo Moment #37, which is also called the Daigo Parry moment. That moment occurred in the Semi-Final round of the Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike tournament at EVO 2004. The match brought together Daigo Umehara and Justin Wong, two players who are often considered rivals by the community because they have different points of view in understanding Street Fighter.

At the moment of a decisive victory, Daigo was in a desperate need. The amount of Ken’s HP that he played was only a pixel. While on the other hand Justin Wong still has a lot of HP and a full Gauge Meter. Out of wits, Chun Li from Justin then issued “Super Art” to finish off Ken. Shouldn’t Ken from Daigo lose? Daigo’s HP is one pixel left, even if he deflects, Chun-Li’s attack damage still goes through, and Daigo loses.

But no, Daigo who was still 23 years old acted beyond normal humans. Daigo blocked the attack with Parry, which keeps the enemy’s attack damage unable to enter.

Doing one-time Parry in Street Fighter is difficult because Parry is not just holding back like Blocking. But, in a very desperate state, Daigo performed Parry FIFTEEN TIMES on Justin Wong’s movements perfectly, nullify all of Justin Wong’s Super Art damage.

Not only that, after Parry, Daigo counterattacked with a perfect combination of moves. Justin Wong’s Chun-Li was finally defeated. Thanks to this moment, Daigo Umehara qualified for the Final EVO 2004 for Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike.

From a sports point of view, since I don’t really follow football, the only clutch play I remember most came from American football. This moment occurred during the 2014 season. A rookie player named Odell Beckham Jr. (OBJ) from the New York Giants managed to surprise the audience thanks to his one-handed catch. Even though his condition is being closely guarded, even his shirt is pulled, which is a form of violation for defenders in American football.

Sumber: Al Bello - Getty Images
Source: Al Bello – Getty Images

So, is it a clutch moment? It’s a little outrageous if you still have doubts about the one-handed catch moment. Why? First, catching a football ball standing still is difficult enough, especially if the throw is hard.

Second, catching the ball while running unattended is also difficult. Now, you just have to imagine, how difficult it is to catch the ball with two hands, in such tight guard as that moment. But interestingly, in a state of stress, OBJ acted beyond normal human reasoning, reached for the ball with one hand, caught it, and scored a Touchdown. Unfortunately, the New York Giants lost at the end of the match.

How the Clutch Moment in Esports Can Happen

Before we argue from external factors (whether it’s the opponent’s carelessness due to witchcraft or a breakup), we must see how a clutch moment can occur based on the athlete’s internal factors.

For this matter, I also discussed with Yohannes Paraloan Siagian, who was a Principal of SMA 1 PSKD, and also had the position of Vice President of EVOS Esports.

Prior to this article, I also had a conversation with “Mas Joey” when discussing the struggles of athletes from the perspective of esports psychology. When discussing the clutch play, Joey said that there are indeed many factors to determine whether a moment is a clutch or not. However, most of these other factors come from external, which we will discuss in the last subsection.

But one thing is for sure, there are at least three internal factors of an athlete/player that make this possible. The three factors are, confidence and mental toughness, the player’s skills, and the player’s experience.

Experience and skills, arguably come from cognitive abilities (reading situations, reasoning, logic, and processing information) and motor skills (moving the muscles of the hands, feet, fingers, or the body as a whole) of a player. Meanwhile, the mental toughness factor comes from a player’s psychological ability.

“Even though a clutch moment can be debated from the external side, the main component of the clutch in my opinion is confidence and knowledge of self. First of all, he was confident that he could win in a stressful situation. Second, that self-confidence comes from knowing his level of ability, and awareness of what he can do in the situation. So, in the clutch concept, oftentimes, who can show clutch performance is someone who feels that he is in control at some point in the match”, Joey explains about the clutch concept.

In terms of skills, one theory that could explain the clutch phenomenon might be the concept of Muscle Memory. I already explained this concept when discussing aiming tips in FPS games, the point is that the longer and more often you do repetitions of an activity, the more flexible your motor or body movements will be for these activities.

There is an interesting phenomenon that was explained by a neuroscientist from the Oxford University named Ainslie Johnstone in an article published in Medium.

She tells about the phenomenon of a patient named H.M, who suffered from amnesia and lost the ability to learn and create new memories. Interestingly, H.M still had the ability and was adept at drawing, even though he had these conditions. However, because of his condition, H.M could not remember that he had ever practised drawing and could not even remember what equipment he needed to draw. But when he was asked to draw with the drawing tool already in hand, he could draw almost unconsciously and automatically.

From Joey’s explanation and the Muscle Memory phenomenon, it becomes increasingly clear how the clutch moment can occur. When talking about skills and experience, Joey also emphasized that these two things were created through continuous repetition or repetition of one activity.

This is the reason why training for an athlete or esports player is in the form of repetition. An esports player can play for 8 hours a day, only to repeat the same things. Dota 2 players may have spent hundreds, thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of hours just playing on the same map and facing various kinds of hero combinations. Likewise, with CS: GO players, who have probably faced the same long hallway hundreds of thousands of times in De_Dust2 and also with Street Fighter players like Daigo Umehara, who has issued a Hadouken command hundreds of thousands of times.

This repetition makes the clutch moment sometimes could not be explained by the player himself. My colleagues, fellow esports journalists, are probably the ones who understand the conditions of esports players best. Usually, when we ask questions about what is on a player’s mind during the clutch moment, sometimes esports players can only answer with one word… Reflex.

If we base on the Muscle Memory concept, that is not the wrong answer. After hundreds, thousands, even millions of repetitions, the clutch moment that we think is complicated, can be done almost automatically by the player, even it feels like a reflex.

Coming back to Sports, this also explains why OBJ, the rookie player of the New York Giants, could catch with one hand in a pinch.

He told that he had deliberately included the catch of one hand in the exercise and the warm-up he did. In fact, the one-handed catch was debated by the coaches of the American Football team, because it was considered too showy and useless. So, OBJ can do one-handed clutch catch because he is practising. If OBJ never once practised catching the ball with one hand, surely that Catch of the Year moment will never happen.

Okay, that was about muscle memory, skills, and experiences that a player or athlete has. The second factor comes from psychological factors, namely the mental toughness of the player. Mental matters are indeed important in competition, including esports. Ellavie Ichlasa Amalia, Hybrid Senior Writer, briefly discussed the mental burden of an esports athlete, and various ways to overcome it. Citing a statement from Mia Stellberg, Astralis team and OG psychologist, the article explains how stress can negatively impact the performance of esports players.

Interestingly, on the other hand, stress can actually have a positive impact on player performance. Linking stress, mental endurance, and the clutch phenomenon, there is one old theory to explain this. The theory is called the Yerkes-Dodson Law which was coined by two psychologists, Robert Yerkes and John Dillingham Dodson, through a study they conducted in 1908.

In this theory, they tested how the impact of pressure on rats’ ability to create a habit. They observed 40 mice who were instructed to choose between black or white boxes. The mouse that chooses the black box will be electrocuted, while the one that chooses the white box will be fine. The experimental mouse will be considered successful through the test if it succeeds in selecting the white box in 10 consecutive tests for 3 days.

From these experiments, it was found that if the stun black-box level is increased to a certain level, more mice will become more adept at choosing the white box. However, if the stunning level is too high or too low, the number of mice that select the white box will be less and less.

This research is often to be a basis for the explanation that a person’s work performance can improve if he is under a certain level of mental stress. So, using this theoretical basis, it is more or less explained why in a state of pressure, an athlete or esports player sometimes appears more brilliant.

In the esports scene, the best figure to be an example of this theory might be Andreas Hojsleth, a CS: GO Astralis team player who is better known by the nickname Xyp9x. This player may not be the type of star player like Coldzera, but in recent years he has become known as the Clutch Minister by the community. This nickname was given because of the Xyp9x’s consistently improved performance when the situation was under pressure.

Andres Bulme, one of the famous Shoutcasters in the CS: GO scene, gave his comment on Xyp9x. “We sometimes call him a robot. This is because he seems to always be able to provide solutions in stressful situations when there is very little time left, but many options are available that can be done.”, said Andres.

The Xyp9x phenomenon explains more or less how the Yerkes-Dodson Law works. It explains that it turns out that there are some esports players who actually shine when they are under pressure.

I also discussed with Joey regarding this Yerkes-Dodson Law.

Joey then explained, “it is true that the YD (Yerkes-Dodson) concept explains that the higher the pressure, the higher one’s performance. But you could say that is normal because the law of YD applies to everyone. Honestly, the majority of people just perform or work when there is pressure. Chased by a deadline for example, or like you who are being billed for an article by Mas Yabes,” he said jokingly.

“But when it comes to train athletes, I believe that YD has a point, but there’s an addition. The more we develop the athlete’s ability to cope with (mental) stress, the more external pressure he will receive. The more resilient he is, mentally, the more he can perform above optimally when under pressure; so he will be able to clutch more often.” Explained Joey, who has 20 years of experience as a sports training practitioner with a background in psychology, as well as experience in fostering and training youth athletes to become Indonesia’s representative at the national team level.

The Debate about Clutch Moments

As I had touched before, that clutch moment is often debated, especially by sports analysts. Rob Goldberg, sports journalist from BleacherReport, which is one of the top media’s sports in the United States, makes a bold statement that the clutch is actually a short-term memory product of the human brain among fans and analysts.

Why is that? Rob Goldberg does question the clutch from a sports analyst’s point of view and is trying to dig deeper into how one moment can impact the team’s overall outcome.

“For example, we talk about 1vs5 moments in the Valorant game. If it happens in round 1 when the score is still 0-0, is that a clutch? If it happens at 12-12, is it a clutch? If the score of the team with the one-person left is 0, then the enemy team with 5 remaining scores 8, is that a clutch? Lots of situations, conditions, and the timing too,” Joey explains from his point of view what a clutch moment is from a wider perspective.

There may be a point. If we talk about FPS games, players who left alone will have a very difficult time facing a 1vs5 situation with the enemy coming from opposite angles simultaneously. Players who left alone with AR weapons can also win 1vs5 easily if the enemy is eco, and only has a gun. Players with Global Elite Rank can also win 1vs5 situations easily if the opponent is only Rank Silver.

But that doesn’t mean we have to forget the internal factors of the players themselves. The audience might feel that a 1vs5 FPS clutch game moment happened because of luck because players who face their enemies by himself one by one from an angle that they can win.

However, it could also because of that player really understands the map being played. With years of experience and repetition of a map, he knows, in a moment, which angle allows him to be superior to one enemy.

Not to mention about mental endurance and aiming abilities. If the players are not mentally strong, the player’s hand may already be shaking or weak, making the shot unstable. The commitment to target practice that he has been doing for years, so aiming at the enemy’s head area becomes as easy as whistling or riding a bicycle.

I myself think that indeed we can see the clutch moment from two points of view.

From a micro perspective, we are narrowing the clutch moment at one game at a time, and at that moment alone. Regardless of how that moment impacts the team, from a micro perspective, I still feel that the bright moments of an esports athlete can still be called a clutch. Why? Because these moments show the quality of the internal factors of an athlete. This brilliant moment is a testament to the esports athlete’s training, repetition, and mental resilience to pressure, so that he can appear extraordinary when under pressure.

The second point of view is from a macro point of view. From this point of view, we now question the clutch moment from external aspects. As discussed by Joey, if it turns out that you can win 1vs5 but your team loses, that moment may not be called a clutch because it doesn’t have an impact on the team as a whole.

In the end, the luck factor actually also has a role in a match. But after the luck factor, the internal factor of the esports player will still be the key to opening the clutch moment gate. However, the clutch moment will not occur if the player is not ready.

During the discussion, Joey closed the conversation with a quote from actor Samuel Goldwyn who said “The harder I work, the luckier I get.”

Perceiving Athlete’s Struggle from the viewpoint of Esports’ Psychology

“Convenient, isn’t it, getting paid for merely playing games,” that sentence is quite often heard from general public, when they see professional gamer as a profession. What I mean by professional gamers here are those whom are get paid to play games in competitive events. So, the phrase “professional gamers” here does not refer to game streamers or game YouTubers who do not work as esports athletes.

General public, or even gamers themselves often misunderstand working as a professional gamer as easy and fun. Truthfully, this profession is equal to the other professions, they possess their own difficulties and challenges.

Hybrid once brought up on how difficult it is to be the best esports athlete, along with all the sacrifices made by the athletes. The stress level of being an esports athlete is quite high, keeping in mind that they have to fight against many things; their own selves, the rival’s team, and negative comments from haters.

A few while ago, we witnessed how BOOM.ID’s struggle at Bucharest Minor ended beyond expectations. BOOM.ID was considered to give up prematurely while the chance to win was still exist during the battle against TeamTeam. This received the attention of international Dota community and written as “most bizarre ending in Dota 2 History” by joinDOTA, a Dota 2 community page that is recognized by international Dota audience.

This immediately became a sensation over the internet. People shower negative comments with all their might towards one of Indonesia’s Dota 2 team; that is said as a team with the highest commitment. However, does BOOM.ID deserve all the bad comments from the haters and people from the internet just because of that one unfortunate moment?

Observing Esports Athlete’s struggle from the viewpoint of Sports Psychology

Trying to see it from another viewpoint, I was curious to see this case from the psychology’s side. Even though esports psychology is a crucial and difficult thing, unfortunately people underestimate it. Most of the people get straight to the conclusion that a pro player “should have” a great mentality. The truth is, every person’s mentality is different; years of training does not make someone’s mentality become unbreakable.

To answer the question, Hybrid interviewed Yohannes Paraloan Siagian S.Psi. Joey, as his closest people call him, is famous in esports because of his title as the Headmaster of SMA 1 PSKD, the first school in Indonesia which implemented an esports coaching program. Joey told us that he’s a practitioner in sports psychology for almost 20 years. He is experienced on coaching and training athletes and teenagers, some of his apprentices represented Indonesia on national team level.

Witnessing what happened to BOOM.ID on their first game versus TeamTeam, Joey said that the fact is the problem was not merely caused by BOOM.ID solely. According to his observation, both of the teams made the same mistakes. The thing is, BOOM.ID was seen as the one with more mistakes since they were the losing team because of the circumstances. The cause? Joey said that was caused by the players who did not realize about their condition, they were not focused on playing until the game was indeed finished.

According to Joey, that happened because of various factors; some of them are discipline and focus. To explain that, Joey borrowed the analogical term “play to the buzzer” from basketball. This term is used to state a mentality that forces players to focus on their game until the last quarter’s buzz rings without having to think about the result. So, from his opinion, happened because their mentality is not well-trained, either in BOOM.ID or TeamTeam.

So what about the psychology and mentality’s side? Joey explained further that every athlete’s psychological or mental condition, including esports athlete, has their own limits and durability. Like their physique, mental condition needs rest so it could heal to its best state. Generally, someone’s mental can be exhausted, or commonly said as Mental Fatigue. Mental fatigue happened to athletes if they are stressed out, but their strength and stamina are not able to endure everything.

Quoting a psychologists’ writing, named Karen Nimmo from medium.com, there are several indicators when mental fatigue happens to an athlete. According to her opinion, an athlete who is suffering from mental fatigue will make more mistakes, unable to focus, over-think on every aspect that caused anxiety, stiff movement so their performance quality decreased, losing motivation, also bad thoughts appear and they make the athlete scared of doing what they are very proficient at.

A competition as majestic as Bucharest Minor is a competition with a huge mental pressure. There are several factors that caused it to happen that way, such as the huge stage, spotlight from international Dota enthusiasts, tough rivals, also the responsibility of carrying their own nations. Facing this competition, it is obvious that an esports athlete must possess a tough mental strength and durability; so mental fatigue will not attack and they could perform well during the competition.

Ending the conversation, I asked: how important it is to have a mental coach in an esports team? “V-E-R-Y!” Joey answered enthusiastically. He said that this aspect should be included in esports coaching program, because just like sports, esports is not all about a good physical condition, but also mental. “Any team that abandons the mental aspects is just like building a house with ignoring several walls then get confused of why it collapsed,” said Joey.

A Senior Athlete’s Story about Mental Pressure in a Competition

It is unfair if we do not know the experience from an actual esports athlete. Answering this I asked one of the legendary Dota 2 esports athletes for opinion. The player that I interviewed for this article is a senior player that was enlisted in Rex Regum Qeon team on his last career, Farand ‘Koala’ Kowara. Koala had been involved in Dota 2 since a long time ago, around 2006, and he is a veteran who had faced the harsh DotA competition with XcN team, when Dota 2 had not been released yet. He also won MGC 2008 in China while he was still a member of Fnatic.

Since 2017, Koala retired and chose to step back from the Dota 2 competitive events. The reason for his retirement is to give younger players a chance to show what they have got. Retiring does not make Koala stop keeping an eye on Dota 2 competitive events.

I asked his opinion about what happened at the match between BOOM.ID versus TeamTeam in Bucharest Minor 2019 as well. Koala also admitted that the situation where they were at was such a stressful one. It is not a wonder that the teams were panicking so that situation appeared.

Starting from that case, I continued the conversation on how the pressure actually was being an esports athlete. “If they have reached the professional level the responses would be different, they are forced to win, there are rights and obligations, not to mention that they would receive harsh words if they lose, but back again at their own mental strength, it is possible that they could not handle it so they feel pressured but there are those who could so they are fine with it,” added Koala.

He also agreed that the pressure on the stage was very different, it is not equal to an MMR game in Dota 2. “Back to the BOOM moment, if it was an MMR I’m sure they are aware of the situation. But that was different, they were on the stage, the pressure was clearly different. It happened to the others as well, not only BOOM,” stated Koala.

Speaking of pressure in a match, Koala also told that he was not a stranger to the said condition. “It often happened, almost every big qualifier or competition final, the mental pressure like that was present,” Koala said. He continued that how much pressure in a team depends on how much they care about people’s expectation, also how much does the team want to win. The more the player or team care about those internal and external factors, it is possible that the pressure will be bigger.

So, how to face such a stressful condition like this? Every individual has their own way and strategy, also depends on their own mental strength and stamina. Koala told us that he had a quite simple option. “Just play and have fun, don’t think about the result, play and do your best,” he said, ending the conversation with Hybrid.

If we reflect on how Indonesian esports team often failed on international events, I think it is already time to bring an athlete psychologist. Regarding that, Joey also explained that it does not have to be a special mental coach who is a graduate from the Psychology major. In his opinion, a technical and mental coach is alright, as long as they understand and willing to learn about psychology and athlete’s mentality in a match.

However, if we observe the ability or teamwork of Indonesia’s athletes, they can be said as bad; sometimes it could be said that they are better than international players. It is proven by some of the Indonesian players’ skills which are respected by international esports figures, for example, Hansel “BnTeT” Ferdinand from CS: GO or Kenny “Xepher” Deo from Dota 2.

In the end, mental training and the understanding of esports psychology that is implemented as hard as playing skill training will also make Indonesian player to successfully roar their name in the world level. Even though, this thing depends on each of the players’ ability to absorb those various trainings.

Borderlands 3: 1 Year, 4 DLCs, and 300 Hours Later

I have to say at the beginning that I am a huge fan of the Borderlands series. I play all of the games from BL1, BL2, BL: TPS, and BL3. I wrote my review when the game was released a year ago. Now, it has released all of its first Season Pass DLCs — since it will have a 2nd Season Pass. That’s why I want to revisit this game to look at its progress and result so far.

I have been playing it for more than 300 hours (EPIC+Steam versions). It’s not much I admit… Compared to POE 2: Deadfire, I play that game for more than 500 hours. I play Skyrim for more than 600 hours. Despite my short time playing this game, I never uninstall it from my PC.

I come and go with this game. When there is a new update, I play a little while. Yet, sadly, it can’t make me stay for a long time. Nevertheless, I do appreciate Gearbox’s best effort to keep updating BL3.

For a justification in writing this opinion, I have finished all 4 DLCs and 2 Takedowns. I have 4 characters (Amara, Zane, Moze, and Fl4k) finished their main story campaign and reached the latest level cap (65). Last, before we go further, spoilers alert!

Stale Storytelling

This is my biggest gripe with BL3. Indeed, the previous game (BL: TPS) doesn’t deliver an outstanding plot, but BL2 is amazing from a storytelling point of view.

Let’s dig deeper on each part of the game and compare it with BL2.

From the base game, BL2 has Handsome Jack as a remarkable nemesis. He is funny and annoying at the same time, which is not easy to create such a character.

Via: The Verge
Via: The Verge

BL3? It has annoying characters. Tyreen and Ava, I hate them. Gearbox fails to redeem Tyreen or Ava even after 4 DLCs.

Still, on the main story of BL2, Claptrap is featured in most parts of the campaign. In BL3, Claptrap doesn’t get enough spotlight. To be fair, Claptrap is my favourite character in the Borderlands franchise.

The story of Angel and Roland in BL2 are remarkable. It’s heartbreaking, yet Gearbox manages to deliver it delicately. Maya and Lilith’s story in BL3? Not so much. Maya’s death is annoying, thanks to Ava. Lilith is made so weak deliberately in BL3 when she is, in fact, should be the most powerful Vault Hunter.

How about the DLCs?

All DLCs from BL2 are memorable or, at least, offer funny characters in each part. Captain Scarlett (1st) DLC gives Shanks and Herbert that always make me giggle every time I remember them. Mr Torgue (2nd) DLC? Well, who doesn’t like Torgue? Hammerlock (3rd) DLC also has a funny main antagonist, especially if you remember the final battle.

BL3 also fails to deliver a meaningful ending with its last DLC. Meanwhile, the last campaign DLC from BL2, Tiny Tina’s, is one of the best DLCs I ever played — along with The Witcher 3’s Blood and Wine.

How about the DLCs from BL3? Even if I played it more recently, I have trouble remembering most characters from those DLCs. Sure I remember Timothy and Krieg, but they are in the previous games. The only new memorable character in BL3 DLC is Burton Briggs from Tentacle (2nd) DLC.

I do think that the writers on BL2 are so much better than the writers on BL3. In BL2, it knows its strongest selling point — silly jokes and characters with a heartbreaking twist. While in BL3, I am not sure what Gearbox is trying to do with its story.

Do fans love Claptrap and Tiny Tina? Sure let’s give them more spotlight in BL2. But, noooo… You guys won’t see them enough in BL3. To be fair, sure Claptrap has a funny tale in Tentacle DLC, and we have Krieg as the main focus in DLC 4, but I think it’s just not enough — especially when they can’t create the same level of goofiness using new characters.

Last but not least, there is no follow-up with the war that was mentioned at the end of BL: TPS. I am frustrated when it isn’t presented in the base game. I hoped it would be brought up in the DLCs. Yet, Gearbox manages to torment me once again.

Evolved Gameplay

Although I’m still disappointed Gearbox doesn’t want to bring new playable characters as DLC, Gearbox has done a better job in the gameplay aspect of BL3 — compared to its storytelling.

Let’s discuss the gameplay throughout the updates. At launch, every character was quite balanced. It’s not perfectly balanced though since Zane had the worst class mods compared to others.

However, it’s getting worse when Gearbox launched Mayhem Mode and higher level caps. Fl4k and Moze suffered a lot because of their action skills were not scalable. Fl4k’s pets were useless because their damage and health couldn’t compete at higher levels. Even though Amara has been consistent enough, her build variety was very narrow.

The only scaling damage was from the guns for a long time. Skill action, melee, and pets’ damage didn’t scale at all. Although thankfully, it’s fixed now, I think it shouldn’t be a problem at all if Gearbox learned their mistake from BL2.

The balancing problem with BL2 is caused by non-scaling damage besides from guns. That’s why Salvador is the only beast in OP levels while the others can’t compete with him in terms of damage.

Again, luckily, Gearbox addressed the problem in BL3 in June 2020 along with the release of Bounty of Blood (DLC 3). Still, it takes too long if you ask me. BL3 was released in September 2019 and Gearbox should have realized their mistake from BL2. So, I don’t get why they need 9 months to fix that problem in BL3.

Even now, a year after release, BL3 still has balancing problem. For example, Fl4k’s blue skill tree capstone is still useless. Meanwhile, Moze’s blue skill tree capstone is far more useful than the others.

Gearbox plans to release the 4th skill tree for each character. While the plan gives me hope, it causes some concerns.

New DLC from 2nd Season Pass. Via: Gearbox
New DLC from 2nd Season Pass. Via: Gearbox

First, why does it take so long? Considering the new skill trees are the equivalent of new DLC characters, let’s compare it again with BL2. In BL2, Mechromancer was released one month after initial BL2 release date. While Krieg, he was released 7 months later. It didn’t take a year to release 2 new characters (each character has 3 skill trees), yet it takes more than a year for a new skill tree for four characters.

The second concern, it takes so long and so many updates for BL3 to reach its current state. Yet, not every initial balancing problem is fixed. So, will Gearbox create more problems with new skill trees?

Conclusion

Gameplay-wise, I know that Gearbox manages to fix the scaling problem and I appreciate that. However, as I mentioned earlier, it shouldn’t be a problem in the first place.

Moreover, even after a year and 4 DLCs, there are some problems regarding bugs and balancing. Indeed, it’s better than BL2 since Gearbox didn’t manage to fix that. However, BL2 allows modding (through patches and Phyton SDK), which enables the community to fix so many gameplay problems.

Story-wise, BL3 is definitely worse than BL2 in so many aspects (including DLCs). Gearbox really needs to find a better writing team to handle their next game.

Finally, even after all of that, I still have hope for BL3 and Gearbox. I will probably buy the 2nd Season Pass and play it when the time comes. I will definitely buy and play the next Borderlands game too. However, for me, the next Borderlands game will be the last chance.
