Nokia Southeast Asia Offers Lumia Phones to More Indonesian Developers

Amid the excitement of the record-breaking Windows Phone hackathon event over the weekend in Bandung, a little bit of news may have slipped past the radars of some people. We actually posted it as part of our recap of the event but it’s worth mentioning in a separate post as we now have more details.

At the end of Nokia Lumia Developer Day in Bandung on Sunday, Narenda Wicaksono, Developer Outreach manager for Nokia Southeast Asia threw down a challenge for mobile app developers across Indonesia.

Windows Phone Marketplace Expands to Indonesia and Four Other Countries

Ahead of the public launch of Lumia in Indonesia on February 17, Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketplace has expanded to five additional countries including Indonesia as of today. Just last month, the Redmond giant added six countries to the App Hub so developers could prepare their apps for distribution in those countries. The five countries are Indonesia, Malaysia, Peru, The Philippines, and Argentina, bringing the number of Marketplace availability to 40 countries.

Among the six countries recently introduced to the App Hub, China is the only one not included in this expansion but developers are still welcomed to submit their applications. What is holding back China is unclear although one could speculate that Microsoft may still be working on the legalities and paperworks in order to allow developers to make their apps available to Chinese consumers.

Could Samsung Pose a Threat to Google?

This week’s Monday Note by Jean Louis Gassée sparked an interesting thought and possibility that Samsung is gaining a serious upper hand in the Android world and could use it as leverage against Google. Now why would Samsung do that?

At this point, Samsung probably wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize the relationship with Google, after all, it’s selling tons of Android phones across the world and has become the number one smartphone maker on the planet because of it. Samsung owes a lot of that to Google.

On the other hand, it’s exactly this position that may allow Samsung to put pressure on Google. Samsung is large enough to dwarf its closest competitors and enough of an influence to pull off two of the three Nexus phones, the pinnacle and showcase of Android.

HTC and Motorola are the next largest Android manufacturers yet their sales are nowhere near Samsung’s and in fact have been cannibalized by its Korean competitor. The two companies are suffering.

Microsoft Adds Indonesia to App Hub, Marketplace to Follow

Microsoft kicked off the year by adding six new countries in the App Hub for Windows Phone apps and games distribution, bringing the total number of countries to 41. These new countries are Argentina, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Peru, and the Philippines. This however, does not mean that the Marketplace is open for business yet in those countries.

What Microsoft is doing is opening more distribution channels for existing developers and getting ready for Marketplace rollout in more countries as Windows Phone devices are being prepared to make their way around the world.

Developers from the aforementioned countries though, still have to wait before they can submit their apps as Microsoft still has yet to finalize Marketplace registration and compliance with local conditions.

Ecosystem is Key in Mobile Industry and Nokia has the Right Pieces to Play

I spent most of Thursday with product managers and PR agents for Nokia Indonesia as the company locally launched its flagship qwerty+touchscreen phone, the Asha 303. The phone, which I think is going to be a pretty strong contender in a mobile market like Indonesia, carries the S40 operating system but offers capabilities popularly sought from more expensive smartphones. We discussed on a lot of points regarding Nokia’s position in the country as well as among competitors.

Yes, Nokia has fallen on hard times, the once mighty creator of the smartphone product category is down in the dumps. Sales dwindled, market share took a nosedive, profits flew the coop, its shares are no longer traded on many of the world’s largest stock markets.

In my hand was my N9 which was just brought back from a coma. We spoke about Nokia’s music strategy and the mobile market in Indonesia. I had been using Nokia Music in my N9 and figured I could give them some of my thoughts about the service directly.

Foursquare updates its apps to support five more languages

Foursquare iPhone app INAJust as we posted the other day, the latest updates to Foursquare’s mobile apps carry with it support for Indonesian, Russian, Thai, Portuguese, and Korean. These five new languages join French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, and of course, English. The breadth of support gives Foursquare native language for more than 1.5 billion people, though the majority of which obviously don’t use the service, but at least it’s there for those who want it.

While we were only informed of the changes to the BlackBerry app, today’s update actually brings the additional language support to the iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry apps. To switch languages you’ll need to set your device’s language to your own. Apps that have support for your choice of language will switch along, those who do not will remain with its default language, most of which would be English. If you’re not keen on using your local language on your device then there’s no need to bother.
