[Simply Business] Foxconn Factory: A reality check on Indonesia wages

There’s a lot of fuss concerning how Apple treats its manufacturing partner Foxconn in China, news of Foxconn employees being paid in such low wages of $1.78 per hour making expensive iPhones and iPads.

Then it hit me, is $1.78 per hour cheap? The workers work 12 hours a day, let’s assume that they work 5 days a week. That would make about $1.78 x 12 hours x 20 days equals $427.2. That’s bigger than my first salary at an IT company in 2004! Not to mention it’s still a starter salary for most small companies in 2011.

Deloitte: Ekonomi Internet di Indonesia Lebih besar dari LNG dan Ekspor Elektronik

Baru-baru ini kami membahas mengenai perilaku masyarakat online di Indonesia serta potensi pertumbuhan jumlah pengguna Internet. Kami menemukan bahwa lima besar aktivitas online yang dilakukan oleh orang Indonesia melibatkan media sosial serta layanan berbagi pesan, kami juga menemukan bahwa ada sekitar 50 juta orang Indonesia yang online, angka yang dapat bertambah berlipat ganda dalam waktu kurang dari lima tahun jika melihat tingkat pertumbuhan saat ini.

Tetapi apa arti angka serta pertumbuhan ini dalam hal ekonomi? Apakah ini mempengaruhi bisnis? Jika iya, bagaimana cara membandingkan dengan industri lainnya?

Deloitte: Indonesia’s Internet Economy is Bigger than LNG and Electronic Exports

Recently we revealed and discussed about the behaviors of Indonesians online as well as the potential growth of the number of people using the Internet. We found out that the top five online activities by Indonesians involve social media and messaging and we also found out that there are roughly 50 million Indonesians online, a number which may double in less than five years given the current growth rate.

But what does that mean in terms of the economy? Does this affect businesses at all and if it does, how does it compare with other industries?

The Connected Archipelago is a report that was put together by Deloitte and addresses these questions by treating the Internet as a boring industry and measuring it in a traditional way. This isn’t as easy as it sounds. It’s shockingly hard.

The Effect of Kaskus Funding Towards Startup Ecosystem in Indonesia

Kaskus’ receiving funding from GDP Venture made headlines, not only because of the agreement itself but also its impact to startup ecosystem in Indonesia in macro scale.

And we can’t avoid rumors spreading quickly that Kaskus is estimated as $60 millions $80 millions or even $100 millions of value. Kaskus never did confirm their valuation when funded by GDP, getting everybody curious.
