Heading Towards Indonesia’s National Payment Gateway 2013

Several days before, I share on Twitter about the cooperation between (finally) two biggest banks in Indonesia – based on the number of the customer. Bank Mandiri and Bank Central Asia will make their customers able to do inter-transaction via ATM since yesterday, October 11th, 2011. This interconnection can be done through Prima and Link network. Link is an assemblage of public banks consists of Bank Mandiri, BRI, BNI, and BTN.

Many people have waited for this policy. Thus, almost every bank is connected, including using the “ATM Bersama”. However, it is not the end of the banking condition and payment system in Indonesia. It is the beginning of the synergy of payment system in Indonesia which is called as National Payment Gateway (NPG).

Menuju National Payment Gateway Indonesia Tahun 2013

Will Google Wallet Succeed in Indonesia?

A few days ago, Google launched its Google Wallet which is a mobile app that enable cellphones to act just like a credit card to consumer. With an integrated NFC chip pre-installed (currently only in Google’s own Nexus S), consumer could just wave their phone in front of a reader in order to make payments. According to Stephanie Tilenius, VP of Commerce and Payments at Google, it envisions the cellphone to act as a personal financial hub for coupons, merchant loyalty points, payments and receipts.

There’s no doubt that this will change how consumer buy things online and offline, this will impact the world and Indonesia as one of the fastest growing economy in SEA is not an exception. Despite the low credit card penetration in the country, Google Wallet could still impact the credit card growth in Indonesia, if it plays nice.

But still, the question is : can Google Wallet help leverage Indonesia’s ecommerce scene?

Could Android’s NFC Become Indonesia’s e-Payment Solution?

Google’s Android handsets have been growing in popularity in Indonesia, just like in other countries where they can get a smartphone with relatively lower price compared to the iPhone. And to make things interesting, last year Eric Schmidt announced Android Gingerbread’s support for NFC (Near Field Communication) and of course payment is most likely to be the main usage.

In Indonesia, e-payment has been always an issue with almost no e-payment solution working properly. The reason? The users simply have no interest of using e-payment solution and quite happy with manual bank transfer which might be caused by the lack of service that’s easy enough for common user to use, e-payment requires to much hassle compared to e-banking or m-banking.

But of course, this can be easily disrupted.
