GfK: Smartphone Boom Continues in Southeast Asia

GfK Asia released the results of a survey conducted in several countries in Southeast Asia, related to smartphone sales in the region. The survey concluded that the smartphone boom is continuing in Southeast Asia, where a total of nearly 7.7 million smartphone units were sold during the first quarter of 2012 with a value of $2.4 million. The rate of increase in smartphone sales in the region increased in the range of 70%-400% over a year ago, with the Philippines scoring the highest growth percentage.

Of course, Indonesia is the biggest market, where sales exceeded $1.4 billion (58% of total regional sales) and smartphone penetration rate reached 62% as conveyed by Gerrard Tan, Account Director for Digital Technology, GfK Asia.

I’m not sure that the 62% figure is valid with regards to market penetration for smartphones in various regions in Indonesia. It is impossible (for now) for smartphones to have more sales than regular phones in Indonesia. I assume, the survey figures only reflect the conditions in major cities in Indonesia.

Nielsen: The Usage of Mobile Phone to Access Internet in SEA is Increasing

The newest report from Nielsen about the internet access behavior in South East Asia shows that the usage of mobile phone to access internet is increasing. This survey was not only held in Indonesia but also in South East Asia as a whole. Although it doesn’t mention what countries has been surveyed, Nielsen concluded that in next 12 month the usage of internet access via mobile phone – especially smartphone – will reach 61%. Although accessing internet from home will still dominate as the main accessing media, the number will decrease significantly.

Besides mobile phone, there are 33% people stated that they use handheld devices non-mobile phone such as tablet, iPod touch, and PSP to browse. Although that data does not show that mobile phone is the main media – only 4% in 2010 – but there is culture change which push the high increase of internet usage via mobile phone or other handheld devices. Customers surveyed free to choose any media, even more than one media – it makes the figure of the chart can be more than 50% for some media.

More Indonesians have access to the Internet than to radio or newspapers

Internet reach in Indonesia has surpassed traditional media and ranks second only to TV according to a recent survey done by Yahoo! and TNS. The survey was conducted in several major and smaller cities across the country and announced on Tuesday.

Increasing availability of low-cost internet plans from mobile carriers and affordable internet-enabled smartphones have been fueling this growth in the past few years and contributes to the growing use of social media as well as adoption of electronic commerce.

At 89 percent, social networking tops the list of the most popular online activities with web portal visits following at 72 percent, search engine usage  grew to 70 percent, and news reading at 61 percent. It is perhaps a little bit surprising that social network did not achieve a higher result given how pervasive it is among Indonesian internet users.

The landscape has changed significantly since the survey was first conducted. In 2009, all of the above activities were represented by around 57 percent of respondents except news reading which was a lowly 47 percent.
