2011 will be over in just a few hours, last year was an exciting year for digital, internet, web, mobile and startup scene in Indonesia. In addition to appearing new startup, the year 2011 also marked with several falls of startup and slowly-moving startup.

In this article I want to give a brief overview of some of the interesting things that happened during 2011 in the world of technology, especially startup, and try to propose 4 + 1 predictions that will happen in 2012.

Akankah Cloud Computing Menjadi Tren di Indonesia Tahun 2012?

Di dua bulan terakhir ini, sudah terdeteksi sejumlah gerakan perusahaan cloud computing (komputasi awan) di Indonesia. Yang pertama adalah Joyent Cloud yang berpartner dengan Anise Asia — yang berbasis di Malaysia. Joyent Cloud dan Anise Asia beberapa waktu lalu mengadakan seminar yang mencoba memberi informasi tentang keunggulan cloud computing dan mitos-mitos yang menyelimutinya. Joyent Cloud merupakan salah satu pionir layanan cloud computing dan saat ini digunakan oleh sejumlah layanan besar, termasuk LinkedIn.

Berikutnya adalah Amazon Web Services yang memberi dukungan terhadap meetup yang digagas oleh e27 dan StartupLokal lalu. Yang terbaru adalah CBN yang mengembangkan cloud computing data center yang dibantu oleh teknologi switching dari Brocade. Untuk ranah lokal, selain CBN Anda tentu masih ingat bahwa Biznet telah lebih dahulu mengembangkan layanan cloud computing-nya.

Incubation and Mentorship Programs Flock to Indonesia

For the past few months, we’ve been seing the number of incubation and mentorship programs starting to educate tech startup founders in Indonesia. We have local ones such as Merah Putih Inc (DailySocial is involved here), East Ventures Alpha, Jakarta Founder Institute, Project Eden, Telkomsel Bootcamp and numerous other similar programs.

These programs have existed since the beginning of the year and for the past few months it seems obvious that lots of entities want to tap this growing industry. Tech companies, telco/carriers and giant holding groups were amongst the most excited to start these programs and of course in-line with their business model.

2010 was the year for investors flocking to Indonesia and I happened to have met several of them as they went looking around the market, meeting people, looking opportunities to invest in Indonesia. Conclusion: the market is ready, the startups are not. These investors never came back, they were dissappointed. I told them that currently Indonesian tech startup scene needs mentorship, we’ve got some brave talented entrepreneurs but they’re still young and need guidance from mature entrepreneurs. And by “guidance” I don’t mean taking over their company.

Selama dekade terakhir, manusia telah terobsesi untuk membuat alat komunikasi yang lebih portabel, dan tentu saja lebih kecil.

Penemuan laptop, ponsel, tablet PC dalam 15-20 tahun terakhir telah menjadi prestasi besar bagi komunikasi manusia. Orang mulai menggunakan ponsel mereka untuk terhubung ke internet. Dan trennya menunjukkan bagaimana orang modern tidak lagi menonton TV dan lebih memilih smartphone dan tablet PC sebagai sumber utama informasi mereka.

Internet TV, Hot or Not?

For the past decade, human have been obsessed to make communication tools more portable, and of course smaller. Invention of laptops, cell-phones, tablet PC all within the last 15-20 years has been a great achievement for human communication. People start using their phones to connect to the internet, and the trend shows how modern people no longer watch TV and prefer smartphone and tablet PC as their primary source of information.

But lately, a new trend emerge that many people say as the “Evolution of Television” where TV sets are now connected to the internet as a new platform for people to consume information. How this work is actually the same as all other platform, if you already have a huge user-base it is much easier to let people do what they want inside rather than figuring out what to give to them. Now user can download widgets made by third party information provider to install on their TV set, be it news, weather, videos, music, social networking sites, etc.

My first day on the Global Mobile Internet Conference was an amazing experience where I could learn many things about the mobile industry and the Internet directly from the world class champs. There are so many things I learned from following the keynote speakers at this GMIC, and one of the most interesting was the keynote from John Liu, Head of Google China. The topic that was delivered was 7 mobile internet trends in the world, and I think it is a knowledge that is relevant to the startups of Indonesia.

Indonesia itself is very popular with mobile and social media activity that often confuse people from all over the world, at least that’s the impression I got when talking to GMIC speakers and asked their impression of Indonesia.

7 Trend Mobile Internet Menurut John Liu

Hari pertama saya di Global Mobile Internet Conference merupakan pengalaman yang luar biasa dimana saya bisa belajar banyak sekali hal mengenai industri mobile dan internet langsung dari jagoan-jagoan kelas dunia. Twitter merilis daftar Twitter Trends yang didasarkan pada Tweet dari berbagai topik yang muncul di layanan mereka, Twitter Trends sendiri diisi oleh berbagai kategori mulai dari bencana alam, bintang pop, politik sampai daftar tagar paling populer.

Dari blog resmi mereka, Twitter menjelaskan bahwa kini telah terdapat 25 miliar Tweet yang dikirimkan oleh pengguna mereka selama 2010, Twitter kemudian menganalisis berbagai Tweet ini untuk mengindentifikasikan 10 Trend paling populer serta Twitter Trend lainnya berdasarkan kategori tertentu, seperti teknologi, film, tagar, dll.
