The Role of Advertising in Google’s Mobile Strategy

There’s an excellent piece written by Kyle Baxter about Google’s Android strategy. The gist of it is something I’ve always told people about. Google isn’t that interested in building a mobile platform per se. What it wants is another avenue to deliver its advertising because it is arguably the largest advertising channel company, if not one of the largest, in the world, as more than 96% of its $29.3 billion revenue in 2010 came from advertising.

When the company’s aim is to deliver as many ads as possible, it would not be interested in building a paid environment for consumers like what Apple and Amazon do. Consumers see advertising for free, developed and paid for by advertisers. Everything that Google does is built to serve or deliver advertising and thanks to the size and revenue of the company, it has the ability to do just that.

Advertising A Website On TV & Radio: Sense or Non-Sense?

Editor’s note: This guest post is written by Remco Lupker, co-founder and director of TokoBagus, a popular e-commerce site in Indonesia. He wrote about his opinion on advertising, especially a website on traditional media in Indonesia from his TokoBagus TVC experience. Remco originally wrote this article on his blog on November 5, 2011, we have permission to repost this article.

Recently Tokobagus launched its second TV campaign and being responsible for all marketing in Tokobagus I get a lot of reactions and questions on this topic. Basically the reactions vary from “you’re just burning money” to “awesome” and the questions mostly focus on the results and how we measure the results. Time to give some insights in our reasoning, experiences and how results are measured and analyzed. Does offline advertising of an online product or service make sense?

First off, I would like to say “don’t try this at home” meaning be really careful before starting any kind of big offline campaign on TV or radio. To let it make any sense in terms of impact you’re risking a load of money which in a lot of cases is much better spend in online marketing. Almost without any exception I feel extremely strong about promoting online products and services online. Any online marketing has the advantage of momentum, meaning a click on your ad can immediately lead to a conversion. The success of any online “hard-sales” campaign can also be measured instantly with a high accuracy.

Making Sense of Indonesian Internet Scene

I was reading SangatPedas the other day and ended up reading up most of the threads on Indonesian internet scene. Some of them are very interesting and this being Sunday and all, I couldn’t resist.

Let’s start with Remco’s beef on Online Advertising this being the least understood part of the Indonesian market/internet ecosystem.

My understanding of his language is that he thinks the Online Ad market is already oversaturated and only allows for opportunities to those with scale (aka. current news status quo, Detik/Viva/etc.):

Well, once you have a critical mass and you’re in the top of the hierarchy the advertising game changes

In fact, I agree to almost everything his said up to and including that sentence. Beyond that, I think he got it completely wrong.

After A While, AdMob Users Should Move To AdSense Mobile

It just made sense, after Google acquired mobile ad-network AdMob November 2009 it’s just about time they integrate AdMob with their current AdSense platform.

We recently received email from the AdMob team to register for an AdSense account and start using AdSense for mobile for monetizing content. The email also indicates some sort of deadline, September 30th 2011 for publishers to go “uninterrupted”

Here’s the full email
