Google Akhirnya Perkenalkan Google Drive

What Problem is Your Startup Trying to Solve?

It's difficult to be this excited about local startups

Pownce, Convore, and Grove founder Leah Culver shared her story about living using cloud services and doing away with the traditional sense of ownership. Of course, being in the US it’s ridiculously easy to do this whereas for us in Southeast Asia, it’s the stuff dreams are made of.

We can’t have a cab company like Uber because it’s against the law, at least in some countries (maybe all). AirBNB can’t yet operate properly due to the high amount of trust required by both parties (and also the law). Grocery deliveries are still unreliable. Dropbox requires a reliable, widespread 3G connection. We can’t buy books on Kindle or iBookstore, no Rdio, Spotify, not even iTunes Store.

Living in a third world country is a bitch, but you know what, that means there’s plenty of opportunities to figure out how to come up with services and products that solve these problems. That’s the challenge in living in this part of the world. People get preoccupied with first world entitlements that some of the more basic needs in this region gets forgotten. This is where local entrepreneurs should step up, identify those problems and come up with workable solutions.

Fujitsu Helps BPPT to Develop Cloud Infrastructure for Government

As I have discussed in some previous posts, 2012 will be an important milestone for cloud infrastructure in Indonesia. Provider will begin to conduct roadshows and strengthen their brand awareness, while costumers and potential costumers can’t wait to test the service as a solution to their needs. It seems the cloud solution began to spread to the government sectors.

Fujitsu Indonesia is acting as cloud infrastructure provider, meanwhile BPPT is a cloud user that related to the data centre and Knowledge Management System. This project, as quoted from Swa, is scheduled to be completed in January 2012. BPPT is the first client of Fujitsu cloud services in Indonesia.

Interestingly, local government seems to understand about the necessity of using cloud technology to support the public promotion. Cimahi municipal government and Pekalongan regency government are two local governments that will use the solutions offered by BPPT (and of course everything would be stored in the cloud infrastructure). In addition, BPPT is also targeting to get a new “small and medium enterprises” as clients.

The 3 Myths of Cloud Computing

In a cloud computing seminar, Mr Francis Lee from Joyent said there are a number of myths about cloud computing. The myths that made people and companies are still reluctant to switch the old model to data centre cloud computing services. Education about cloud computing is absolutely necessary to know what are the advantages and disadvantages of cloud computing. Indonesia in 2012, As I predicted, will be year where people would want to know more about cloud technologies, including try the service directly.

One certain thing is, by diverting resources to the cloud doesn’t mean the data owner can relax and not interfere if there are things that are not working (ie: crashes, hacked) with cloud service providers. At the initial of contract, service providers must have discussed with clients to design the system environment for obtaining optimal results. This is the proof of the cloud service providers’ seriousness in order to help us dealing with the change of resources from the system owned by the company.

Here are some myths of cloud computing that are mentioned Mr by Francis Lee and how it actually happens in the real world:

Blaast Finally Launched, Partners With XL

This morning I accidentally read a Tweet from Fachry Bafadal, one of the ambassadors of Blaast who retweet the information about Blaast services availability for common users.

Feeling curious, I downloaded Blaast application while looking for some additional information. Other information that I found came from Ziyad,  someone that i know as a local software engineer who works for Blaast. He announced that today Blaast has soft-launched and opens their services for those who are interested trying a variety of applications in their ecosystems.

Blaast, a cloud computing platform on mobile device, has been active in Indonesia at least since May 2011. Even though the headquarter is in Finland, Blaast chose Indonesia as the first place to launch their services. One of the main reasons is because the opportunity of feature phone is pretty big here.
