Samsung Waves Goodbye to Plans for Indonesian Mobile Phone Factory

Samsung has rejected a deal from the Indonesian government to build a mobile phone factory in Indonesia according to several sources. The reports cited Industrial Minister MS Hidayat and a director general at the ministry who conceded to the decision by Samsung. Indonesia now needs to look very closely into its policies and practices to rethink its position and approach in foreign cooperation ahead of the ASEAN economic plans for 2015.

Government Officials: Foxconn’s Indonesian Factory To Start Production December 2012

After strong speculations and rumor, Taiwan-based electronic manufacturing company Foxconn is finally set its first factory in Indonesia located 68 kilometres outside Jakarta in Cikande area. Trading Ministry officials said Foxconn will start its production line October December 2012 and ready to produce 3 million phones in its initial phase. Where in Indonesia Will Foxconn Set Up Its Factory?

The location of Foxconn’s Indonesian factory is still under a large question mark. It’s been reported that the government is preparing a 1000 hectare land including the infrastructure required to support Foxconn’s operations outside of Java. However, Industrial Minister M.S. Hidayat stated on Tuesday that the infrastructure condition outside of Java is not tenable. This means that the industrial city which will be built by Foxconn ideally should be located in Java.

According to Detikinet, Hidayat is reluctant to reveal the location candidates for the factory which some say will be Indonesia’s Silicon Valley. He is still waiting for the results of the talks between his team from the Ministry of Industry and the Investment Coordination Board, both of whom are in Taiwan this week to meet representatives of Foxconn.

Foxconn Will Build Factory in Indonesia, What’s In It for Us?

Several media have reported that Foxconn will build a factory in Indonesia. As reported by Antara, the confirmation is disclosed by the Minister of Industries, MS Hidayat who states that the agreement has been signed when the Minister of Trade, Gita Wirjawan visited Taiwan some time ago.

Foxconn will build a factory worth USD1 billion of investment and expected to be able to employ up to 1 million work forces. Although Foxconn is hoping to build a factory in Central Java or East Java region, the government is pushing the location to outside Java by offering some tax incentives. The feasibility study for this factory can take a year.

Foxconn is known as one of the biggest electronic manufacturing companies in the world. Under the official label Hon Hai Precision Industry, Foxconn’s headquarter is in Taiwan and has many factories in some continents. Foxconn’s biggest (and many) factory is located in China. Foxconn owns 13 factories in China, where one factory employs around 100 thousand to 500 thousand workers. Overall number of Foxconn’s workers in China reaches 1.2 million people. Foxconn is also reported to have several factories in Malaysia even though the scale is not too massive.
