The Importance of BlackBerry World for RIM’s Future

Blackberry World, an annual conference attended by the entire supporting ecosystem of Blackberry, is being held on May 1 – 3, 2012 in Orlando, Florida, United States. This year, BlackBerry World will also be host to BlackBerry 10 Jam, a special event for developers where Research in Motion (RIM), will introduce BlackBerry 10, its new operating system for BlackBerry devices that will be released in the second half of this year.

Tyler Lessard, former RIM vice president, said to PC World that the BlackBerry 10 operating system will be different from the existing BlackBerry operating system. Applications on Blackberry App World designed for current operating system will not be compatible with BlackBerry 10.

BlackBerry 10 Jam Juga Akan Digelar di Indonesia

Seperti telah ditulis DailySocial kemarin, BlackBerry World mulai digelar Selasa kemarin di Orlando, Florida, Amerika Serikat. Bersama dengan itu juga digelar BlackBerry 10 Jam, sebuah acara khusus untuk pengembang dalam rangka memperkenalkan BlackBerry 10.

BlackBerry 10 Jam memang dihadiri oleh banyak pengembang dari seluruh dunia, namun sepertinya Research In Motion (RIM) ingin bertemu dengan dengan lebih banyak lagi pengembang, untuk itu RIM akan menyelenggarakan sebuah tur bertajuk BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour ke berbagai negara. Salah satu negara yang dikunjungi adalah Indonesia.

Krusialnya BlackBerry World untuk Masa Depan RIM

BlackBerry World, sebuah konferensi tahunan yang diikuti oleh seluruh ekosistem pendukung BlackBerry, digelar 1-3 Mei 2012 ini di Orlando, Florida, Amerika Serikat. Tahun ini, dalam BlackBerry World juga akan digelar BlackBerry 10 Jam, sebuah acara khusus untuk pengembang dimana pihak Research In Motion (RIM), produsen BlackBerry, akan mengenalkan BlackBerry 10, sistem operasi baru BlackBerry yang baru akan dirilis pertengahan kedua tahun ini.

Tyler Lessard, mantan wakil presiden RIM, seperti ditulis oleh PC World mengatakan bahwa sistem operasi BlackBerry 10 sangat berbeda dengan sistem operasi yang dipakai oleh BlackBerry sekarang ini. Aplikasi-aplikasi yang terdapat dalam BlackBerry App World yang diperuntukkan untuk sistem operasi yang dipakai sekarang, tidak akan bisa dipakai dalam BlackBerry 10.

Blackberry Messenger Is Now Integrated With Other Applications

Blackberry Messenger (BBM) will be able to integrate with your Facebook and Twitter account as Research in Motion (RIM) announced that it will complete the Facebook and Twitter applications with BBM connectivity. With BBM connectivity, BBM user will be able to easily share their Facebook status and tweets with their BBM contacts.

Other than Facebook and Twitter, other applications that are planned to be connected with BBM are BlackBerry Travel, BlackBerry App World and BBM Music. So, in addition to Facebook and Twitter status, BBM users will be able to easily share their activities starting from downloaded applications, favorite applications, planning a trip to downloaded music.

BlackBerry Travel di Indonesia

Sebelumnya saya sudah beberapa kali mencoba BlackBerry Travel. Ini adalah salah satu aplikasi buatan Research in Motion yang bisa dibilang paling banyak mengelola data traveling, tidak cuma sekedar email ataupun messaging. Data sekompleks ini dikelola dengan bekerja sama dengan Expedia — yang merupakan salah satu penyedia layanan travel global. BlackBerry Travel saat ini dikabarkan sudah beroperasi penuh di Indonesia dan melayani pemesanan kamar hotel, pembelian tiket pesawat, dan penyewaan mobil.

BlackBerry Travel juga dapat mendeteksi My Trips (seri perjalanan) yang kita lakukan secara otomatis. Setiap konfirmasi perjalanan yang masuk ke inbox juga akan meng-update rangkaian Trips yang kita miliki. Ini adalah fitur yang menyenangkan buat Anda yang senang membuat itinerary. Selain yang sudah disebut di atas, BlackBerry Travel juga memudahkan konsumen untuk melakukan konversi mata uang dan mengetahui prakiraan cuaca di kota setempat.

BlackBerry Travel in Indonesia

Previously I tried BlackBerry Travel several times. This is one of the applications made by Research in Motion and it is arguably the most widely-managed travelling data, not just simply email or messaging. This complex data is managed with Expedia – which is one of global travel service providers. BlackBerry Travel is already fully operated in Indonesia and able to do hotel reservation service, purchase airline tickets and car rentals.

BlackBerry Travel can also detect My Trips (travel series) that we do automatically. Any journey confirmation enters into inbox and it will also update the Trips series that we have. This is a nice feature for those of you who like to make itinerary. In addition to those already mentioned above, the BlackBerry Travel also allows consumers to perform currency conversions and find out the weather forecast in your local town.

Mengapa Developer Indonesia Masih Tertarik dengan PlayBook?

Research In Motion akhirnya meluncurkan tablet 7-inci mereka yang diberi nama PlayBook pada bulan April lalu setelah tertunda sejak 2010. Meskipun tablet ini ditujukan untuk pasar korporat, perangkat ini tidak dilengkapi dengan fasilitas yang sesuai dengan pasar tersebut. Tidak memiliki dukungan email, kalender, dan tidak ada fasilitas BlackBerry Messenger, kecuali ditambatkan ke sebuah ponsel BlackBerry.

Secara global PlayBook mengecewakan, karena dalam 3 kuartal, pengiriman perangkat ini hanya mencapai 850.000 unit, dan penjualannya sangat, sangat sedikit. RIM mengirimkan 500.000 unit PlayBook pada kuartal pertama penjualan, menurun menjadi 200.000 pada kuartal kedua, dan kemudian 150.000 pada kuartal terakhir tahun lalu. Jumlah ini adalah unit yang dikirimkan ke pengecer, bukan dijual kepada konsumen.

RIM Expects BlackBerry users in Indonesia to Reach 9.7 Million in 2015

Research in Motion (RIM) has achieved success with the BlackBerry marketing in Indonesia until now. As quoted by AFP (published by The Australians), there are about 5 million subscribers of BlackBerry service (BIS and BES) in Indonesia until 2011. They predict the number will be nearly doubled in 2015, to 9.7 million subscribers. Roughly speaking, the increment is projected to reach nearly 20% per year.

Surely the amount isn’t equal with the number of BlackBerry subscribers in the United States which reached 16.5 million subscribers (this indicates the declining signs); however it still shows the importance of Indonesia for RIM’s business. Mr Gregory Wade, RIM Managing Director for Asia, confirmed that Indonesia is a very important market and they believe that nobody love Indonesia more than RIM.

Why Are Indonesian Developers Still Interested in the PlayBook?

Research In Motion finally launched the 7-inch PlayBook tablet back in April last year after much delay since 2010. Though the tablet was aimed at the enterprise market, it shipped with none of the tools used in the field. It had no email support, no calendar, and no BlackBerry Messenger, unless tethered to a BlackBerry phone.

Globally, it was disappointing, having shipped only 850,000 units in three quarters and selling clearly much, much less. RIM shipped 500,000 PlayBooks in its first quarter of sales, dropping to 200,000 in the second, and then 150,000 in the last quarter of the year. Those are units shipped to retailers, not sold to consumers.

The company then put the PlayBooks through two fire sales, first at the end of last year when it halved the prices of each model, and then this month when it changed the prices to just $299 across all three models. It also failed to deliver 3G and WiMax versions of the device.

Despite those glaring failures, there are software developers who are still interested in creating applications for the PlayBook. At the BlackBerry developer conference in Singapore in early December, over a thousand attendees showed up and each one received a complimentary PlayBook.
