BlackBerry Casual Meetup Pertama Telah Berlangsung di Bandung, Kota Lain Menyusul

BlackBerry Casual Meetup 2012 yang pertama telah selesai diadakan di Bandung, hari Sabtu tanggal 3 Maret 2012 kemarin. Acara yang diselengarakan di kafe – sesuai dengan konsep acaranya ini berhasil mengumpulkan lebih dari 50 peserta, yang terdiri dari mahasiswa, umum serta para developer.

Acara di Bandung ini juga menjadi acara pembuka roadshow casual meetup yang akan diadakan juga diberbagai kota di Indonesia, Malang, Yogyakarta, Jakarta dan Bali.

Untuk yang di Bandung acara diadakan di Vanilla Kitchen & Wine dan diadakan dari pagi sampai sore hari, dengan menghadirkan 3 pembicara serta 2 demo produk atau showcase. Acara juga dihadiri oleh perwakilan RIM yang membuka acara dengan kata sambutannya.

Jason Sounderson – Director Government Relations dalam sambutan singkatnya menekankan beberapa hal, terutama yang berhubungan dengan lingkungan pengembangan aplikasi serta peran developer. Masih berhubungan dengan developer, Jason juga memberikan informasi bahwa pada hari yang sama (sore hari) RIM dan ITB mengumumkan akan bekerja sama dengan ITB untuk pusat riset dan pengembangan aplikasi, dan berencana juga untuk bekerja sama dengan universitas lain.

BlackBerry Casual Held First Meetup in Bandung, Other Cities Follow

The 1st BlackBerry Casual Meetup 2012 was held in Bandung, on Saturday, March 3rd, 2012. The event was held at the cafe – according to the show concept show, this event was able to collect more than 50 participants, from students, public general and developers.

Bandung event has also become the opening act for casual meetup road-shows to be held in various cities in Indonesia such as Malang, Yogyakarta, Jakarta and Bali.

This event was held in Vanilla Kitchen & Wine from morning until late afternoon. This event was presenting three speakers and two demo products or showcase. The event was also attended by RIM representatives who opened the event with his speech.

Jason Sounderson – Director of Government Relations in a brief speech emphasizing some things, especially those related to application development environment and the role of developer. Still in touch with the developer, Jason also gave information that at the same day (late afternoon), ITB and RIM would announce a cooperation for the centre research and development applications; they also plans to collaborate with other universities.

RIM Released Playbook 2.0, Is It the Rise of the Playbook?

One of RIM’s policies that we have been waiting for finally arrived. On Tuesday, February 21st 2012, RIM released the latest operating system for Blackberry Playbook tablet. These tablet users may be able to download the latest operating system for free. In a news release, RIM BlackBerry Playbook claimed that the new OS 2.0 will provide an increased experience using the tablet, thus it could make users having every best moment by using their BlackBerry Playbook in daily life both at work or play.

Not many surprises that RIM has presented in this update. This operating system allows Playbook running Android application which had been converted (as already discussed previously in DailySocial). As addition, finally, Playbook 2.0 has the default application allowing users to receive email from their Playbook.

Rather than to attract new users, this Playbook update is more to impress or satisfy existing Playbook user. An email application is allowing users to receive email from multiple accounts but this isn’t their advantage. Almost all Android tablet and iPad are able to do this since their first launched.

RIM Rilis PlayBook 2.0, Kebangkitan PlayBook?

Satu dari kebijakan RIM yang ditunggu-tunggu akhirnya tiba. Selasa, 21 Februari kemarin, RIM merilis sistem operasi terbaru untuk tablet Blackberry PlayBook. Pengguna tablet ini mulai bisa mengunduh sistem operasi terbaru ini secara gratis. Dalam rilis beritanya, RIM mengklaim bahwa BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 yang baru akan menyajikan peningkatan pengalaman dalam menggunakan tablet, agar penggunanya dapat membuat setiap momen menjadi yang terbaik dengan menggunakan BlackBerry PlayBook mereka dengan cara-cara baru di kesehariannya baik saat kerja maupun bermain.

Tidak banyak kejutan yang dihadirkan RIM dalam update ini. Sistem operasi ini memungkinkan PlayBook menjalankan aplikasi Android yang sudah di-convert, seperti yang sudah dibahas di DailySocial sebelumnya. Selain itu, akhirnya, PlayBook 2.0 mempunyai aplikasi bawaan yang memungkinkan pengguna menerima email dari PlayBook-nya.

Alih-alih untuk menarik pengguna baru, update PlayBook ini lebih terkesan sebagai pemuas untuk mereka yang sudah mempunyai PlayBook. Aplikasi email ini memang memungkinkan pengguna untuk menerima email dari beberapa akun, tetapi ini bukan suatu kelebihan. Hampir semua tablet Android dan iPad sudah bisa melakukan ini sejak pertama kali diluncurkan.

RIM Continues to Embrace Developers to Boost PlayBook App Numbers

Some people may think that RIM is getting desperate in trying to improve the sales of its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet because in recent months, it had been dropping its prices to a level below US $200. More recently, RIM announced through its BlackBerry Developer Blog that it will give away PlayBooks to developers who want to port their Android apps to run on the PlayBook.

These moves by RIM could be seen as desperate measures On the other hand, you could say that RIM is investing to rise again. As discussed previously in DailySocial, RIM continues to embrace a variety of developer communities, including Android developers, to boost the number of applications that can be run on different devices made by RIM.

Back at CES 2012, RIM announced that PlayBook 2.0 operating system will be equipped with a runtime which enables it to run Android applications. Furthermore, in late January, RIM released three tools to make it easier for Android developers to port their apps to be compatible with the PlayBook.

Kabar dari Blackberry DevCon Europe

Research In Motion (RIM) baru saja selesai menggelar Blackberry DevCon Europe di Amsterdam 7-8 Februari kemarin. Developer Conference yang pertama kali digelar di Eropa ini memecahkan rekor jumlah peserta, yang mencapai 2000 orang. Jumlah peserta ini, bisa dijadikan gambaran dari antusiasme developer dari kawasan tersebut terhadap masa depan Blackberry.

Acara ini dibuka langsung oleh CEO RIM yang baru, Thorsten Heins. Dalam sambutannya, yang videonya bisa dilihat di laman Crackberry, Heins menegaskan kembali komitmen RIM kepada para developer. RIM menjamin ekosistem dan dukungan yang dibutuhkan pengembang untuk bisa sukses dalam kerja samanya dengan RIM. Heins bahkan menggunakan kata-kata seperti “without you, the BlackBerry solution wouldn’t be complete”.

RIM Terus Rangkul Developer untuk Dongkrak Aplikasi

Beberapa kalangan mungkin berpikir bahwa RIM mulai putus asa dalam menaikkan penjualan tablet Blackberry Playbook miliknya. Pasalnya, dalam beberapa bulan terakhir, harga Blackberry Playbook terus dipangkas hingga mencapai angka di bawah 200 US Dollar. Yang paling aktual, melalui Blackberry Developer’s Blog, RIM mengumumkan akan memberikan Blackberry Playbook terbaru secara gratis. Playbook gratis ini akan diberikan kepada developer yang mau meng-convert aplikasi Android miliknya, hingga bisa dijalankan ke tablet Blackberry.

Berbagai kebijakan RIM ini, mungkin terlihat sebagai langkah-langkah putus asa. Namun sebenarnya, bisa dibilang RIM sedang berinvestasi untuk bisa bangkit lagi. Seperti yang pernah dibahas di Daily Social, RIM terus berusaha untuk merangkul berbagai komunitas developer, termasuk developer Android, untuk mendongkrak jumlah aplikasi yang bisa berjalan di berbagai perangkat besutan RIM.

Seperti diketahui, pada pergelaran CES 2012 yang lalu, RIM mengumumkan bahwa sistem operasi Playbook 2.0 akan dilengkapi dengan runtime yang memungkinkannya bisa menjalankan aplikasi Android. Selanjutnya, pada akhir Januari, RIM memanjakan developer Android dengan merilis 3 pilihan tools untuk developer Android yang ingin meng-convert aplikasi Androidnya agar bisa dijalankan di Blackberry Playbook. Dalam rilis tersebut, RIM menjamin kemudahan proses converting dengan tools telah disediakan.

Mengapa Developer Indonesia Masih Tertarik dengan PlayBook?

Research In Motion akhirnya meluncurkan tablet 7-inci mereka yang diberi nama PlayBook pada bulan April lalu setelah tertunda sejak 2010. Meskipun tablet ini ditujukan untuk pasar korporat, perangkat ini tidak dilengkapi dengan fasilitas yang sesuai dengan pasar tersebut. Tidak memiliki dukungan email, kalender, dan tidak ada fasilitas BlackBerry Messenger, kecuali ditambatkan ke sebuah ponsel BlackBerry.

Secara global PlayBook mengecewakan, karena dalam 3 kuartal, pengiriman perangkat ini hanya mencapai 850.000 unit, dan penjualannya sangat, sangat sedikit. RIM mengirimkan 500.000 unit PlayBook pada kuartal pertama penjualan, menurun menjadi 200.000 pada kuartal kedua, dan kemudian 150.000 pada kuartal terakhir tahun lalu. Jumlah ini adalah unit yang dikirimkan ke pengecer, bukan dijual kepada konsumen.

RIM Expects BlackBerry users in Indonesia to Reach 9.7 Million in 2015

Research in Motion (RIM) has achieved success with the BlackBerry marketing in Indonesia until now. As quoted by AFP (published by The Australians), there are about 5 million subscribers of BlackBerry service (BIS and BES) in Indonesia until 2011. They predict the number will be nearly doubled in 2015, to 9.7 million subscribers. Roughly speaking, the increment is projected to reach nearly 20% per year.

Surely the amount isn’t equal with the number of BlackBerry subscribers in the United States which reached 16.5 million subscribers (this indicates the declining signs); however it still shows the importance of Indonesia for RIM’s business. Mr Gregory Wade, RIM Managing Director for Asia, confirmed that Indonesia is a very important market and they believe that nobody love Indonesia more than RIM.

Why Are Indonesian Developers Still Interested in the PlayBook?

Research In Motion finally launched the 7-inch PlayBook tablet back in April last year after much delay since 2010. Though the tablet was aimed at the enterprise market, it shipped with none of the tools used in the field. It had no email support, no calendar, and no BlackBerry Messenger, unless tethered to a BlackBerry phone.

Globally, it was disappointing, having shipped only 850,000 units in three quarters and selling clearly much, much less. RIM shipped 500,000 PlayBooks in its first quarter of sales, dropping to 200,000 in the second, and then 150,000 in the last quarter of the year. Those are units shipped to retailers, not sold to consumers.

The company then put the PlayBooks through two fire sales, first at the end of last year when it halved the prices of each model, and then this month when it changed the prices to just $299 across all three models. It also failed to deliver 3G and WiMax versions of the device.

Despite those glaring failures, there are software developers who are still interested in creating applications for the PlayBook. At the BlackBerry developer conference in Singapore in early December, over a thousand attendees showed up and each one received a complimentary PlayBook.
