East Ventures Announces New Portfolio, Releases East Ventures Angels Network

In the Jakarta Ventures Night (JVN) 2012 which was held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, East Ventures officially announced the two of their latest portfolio. Two startups are: Inapay and Jajalindo.

East Ventures (EV) is one of early stage investor who may be the most active in Indonesia. Some startups (which got their investment) have been discussed several times. East Ventures is one of Disdus investors, a daily service deal that got acquired by Groupon.

The announcement of this latest portfolio similar to what EV did when they officially announce their two new portfolios: Nightspade and TeknoUp in Jakarta Ventures Night 2011. For the 2012 JVN, they officially announced two portfolios again; so the total portfolio that they have now are 14,  11 from Indonesia and 3 from Singapore. In addition, there are 6 startups from Alpha Ventures East program, and they also make presentations in 2012 JVN.

The List of Participants That Do Pitching In 2012 Jakarta Ventures Night

Jakarta Ventures Night 2012 was held on Thursday January 12th, 2012 and presenting a variety of startup and services that have been doing a pitch before the investors, other startup partners, some media and other invitees.

In addition, the event was also featured presentations from startups that have received funding from EV such as idBlognetwork, Penn-Olson and Nightspade; Several other speakers like Mr Edi Taslim from Digital Compass and Mr Shinichi Takamiya, a speaker who describes the strategy to build startup and a financial strategy for startup

Unlike JVN event last year, this time “pitching” wasn’t done by the invited startup to introduce their startup but also “pitch” and demo from Alpha Ventures East program graduates that have been held since the past 100 days. As previously announced, there are 6 program participants who passed the first batch of EV Alpha. So in total, there are 18 pitches this time.

Do Network, Online platform from Lenovo to Change Idea becoming Reality

Last Saturday, Lenovo held a media briefing to explain the program that it’s currently running; to create Indonesian “Doers” which can actualize their various ideas. This program is a competition called “Do Network”.

The registration of this completion has been actually opening since 8th of Dec, 2011 and until last Saturday more than 214 participants have registered.

Lenovo Do Network is basically a competition to collect the ideas, prototype, or the basic product from the participants correspond to various challenges that are given in every round. Apart from that this program is intended to create an online platform for actualizing the ideas; You can be a project leader, team member, voter, which later there would be 3 (three) mentors who can assist the process of developing the idea. This competition will be running in 4 (four) rounds, each round – 90 days consists of the various challenges.

Event Report: GameLan 3rd Meetup and the Introduction to ‘Jogja International Game Summit 2012′

You, DailySocial readers, might already know that GameLan is a startup game dev community from Yogyakarta. On its 3rd meetup, they had a theme “The Youngster, The Creator”. The speakers on this event were the students who build games, the game development team.

Those teams are Creacle Game Studio from Computer Science Department of UGM, Amagine Interactive from Electronic Engineering Department of UGM, and IndonesiaMini from Information System Department of UKDW.

The first speaker was from Creacle Game Studio, Gathot Fajar. He is one of Creacle’s crews. He explained that Creacle was established in 2011 by several Computer Science Department of UGM students with the vision to develop game on all platforms with local content.

Event Report: Asia’s First WebFWD in Bandung

Bandung was the first place in Asia for WebFWD (Web Forward), an acceleration program by Mozilla. As we reported earlier, WebFWD hosted two meetups held in Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) and Pikiran Rakyat Bandung building, on Monday, November 14, 20011.

Fauzan Alfi, Regional Leader for Mozilla Community in Bandung told us that ITB students gave a positive response for the event, attended not onlye by ITB students but also from other schools. Participants were enthusiastic following the presentation by Diane Bisgeier, Mozilla WebFWD Program Manager, about WebFWD and other announcement for Mozilla community. The second round of event weren’t as crowded compared to the first one in ITB, but that doesn’s shrink the enthusiasm from attendees.

Akzara: the Winner of Startup Weekend Surabaya

Startup weekend Surabaya has been held for three days 21-23 October 2011 at Ciputra University, Surabaya, UC Town Citraland, Surabaya.

Startup Weekend is an event in which developers, designers, marketers, product managers, entrepreneur enthusiasts and talented persons in any field gather, share ideas, and then make team to build products and launch the startup in the weekend. This event was directed by Startup Weekend NPO team—Kauffman Foundation USA and experts from Indonesia.

The first day was Friday October 21st, 2011. It is the “Ideas Pitching” session in which participants should explain the best idea to make other participants interested to execute the idea.

Event Report: Indonesia Bermain 2011 [Video]

The Indonesia Bermain 2011 has been held successfully for two days 22 – 23 October 2011 in Sabuga Bandung as part of a series of events. Previously, there were roadshows to a number of cities in Indonesia as the warming up and the publication of the Idea competition event.

Indonesia Bermain 2011 was organized by Agate Studio, Kummara, Marketing magazine, and AnimartDigi. This event was also supported by Nokia Developer, communities, game developers, local game publishers. There were also many attractive games provided for visitors.

Besides, the game facilities from board games and family games (playground), card games, interactive games on PC and digital (mobile), there are some other facilities provided by the organizer. There were conference, exhibitions, music performance, also competitions provided on the stands or special area for games. The aim to provide playing ground was quite successful. You readers can also get other news for the complete review about this event. Meanwhile, I will write this article by taking the participant’s point of view and considering my experiences while attend the event.

The Best Rising Star & The Most Promising Startup at SparxUp Awards 2011

SparxUp Awards 2011 finally ends with an announcement for the 2 winners (Rising Star and Most Promising Startup). The final event started with a conference presenting several keynote speakers such as Dr. Serkan Toto, Steve Tan, Evan Spytama, Danny Wirianto, Pambudi Baskara Sudirman, also a panel discussion with investor – incubator and announcement of SparxUp Awards 2011 winners. There were also exhibitions from the winners from each category.

This event was closed with the awarding for The Best Rising Star and The Most Promising Startup, also the announcement of scholarship from Founder Institute for 5 startups that have highest score from pitching session, these winners are : PesanDulu, AndTechnology, Bistip, Sribu, and Telunjuk.

Asian Can also be the Pioneer for Innovation

The title above is the statement underlined by Serkan Toto, a Japan-based Techcrunch contributors, on his keynote presentation at SparxUp Awards Conference 2011. We all know that most of Asian startups tend to clone US startups. However, cloning is not bad since there are some successful clone acquired or funded for millions of dollars. Moreover, cloning is not monopolized by Asian startups only. European startups, or even the US startups also do the same thing.

In fact, Asian startups can also be innovative, especially in the technology industry. Serkan has identified seven things that made Asia a pioneer for innovation. Here is the list:
