Yello Mobile Acquired Adtech Company Adplus

South Korea-based Yello Mobile announced that they’ve just finalized the acquisition of Adplus’ major shares. This is Yello Mobile’s second acquisition in Indonesia, after previously snapped price comparison startup PriceArea about a year ago. Facebook May Have Also Acquired WhatsApp to Avoid Future Competition

WhatsApp co-founder and CEO Jan Koum insisted that the Facebook deal to acquire WhatsApp would not have happened if Facebook were to interfere in WhatsApp’s operations. With Facebook’s resources, WhatsApp may not have to worry too much about having to generate revenue but as Koum said in his blog post, everything remains as it is, including the $0.99 a year subscription service. This acquisition gives Facebook protection against potential competition that it may have had to face if WhatsApp falls to another company’s hands.

Mark Zuckerberg: Advertising is Not the Way to Monetize Messaging Systems

Instagram was Facebook’s blockbuster deal back in April 2012 when the company announced that it was acquiring the photo sharing network for $1 billion, a deal that ultimately closed at $715 million in Q3 2012. The discrepancy in price was due to Facebook’s falling stock price at that time and the fact that over 60 percent of the acquisition was paid in shares. Instagram slowly rolled out its revenue strategy through implementing in-stream ads in late 2013. With this WhatsApp deal, some fear that it will also follow the advertising path.

Facebook Acquires Mobile Data Company Onavo

Onavo, the Israeli company that offers mobile apps for data management, announced that it has been acquired by Facebook. Based in Tel Aviv, the company’s office will become Facebook’s new office in Israel as both companies have agreed on keeping the team in Israel rather than moving them to Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, California.

The Singapore-based tech blog is kickstarting a new property covering the games industry in the region and it will build the new blog from this acquisition.

SGE’s Gwendolyn Tan on Joining Tech in Asia and Her Views on Startups in the Region

As we reported earlier today, Singapore-based tech blog SGE has been acquired by relative newcomer Tech in Asia following its recent round of investment from IMJ Fenox. The acquisition value is undisclosed but SGE’s two key people will be joining Tech in Asia and the door is also open for SGE’s contributors. Microsoft Buys Nokia’s Mobile Phone Business

The biggest news that everyone in the mobile industry has been waiting for since February 2011 has finally arrived. Microsoft this morning announced that the company will be acquiring Nokia’s devices and services division, essentially Nokia’s mobile phone business, for almost $7.2 billion. Microsoft will license the Nokia brand for use with existing mobile phones for ten years and it will also acquire both the Lumia and Asha brands.
