Layanan penyewaan mobil pribadi berbasis smartphone Uber resmi diluncurkan hari ini. Uber sendiri sebenarnya telah mulai beroperasi di ibukota terhitung sejak awal Juni lalu. Selama dua bulan terakhir, pihak perusahaan memfokuskan diri untuk terus menambah jumlah kendaraan dan pengemudi melalui kerja sama dengan berbagai perusahaan penyewaan mobil serta mengetahui pola, permintaan pasar, dan juga penerimaan publik Jakarta. Untuk saat ini, layanan tersebut masih sangat terbatas karena dikonsentrasikan di seputaran kawasan CBD Sudirman.

Uber Officially Launches in Jakarta Today

Smartphone-based private car hire service Uber is officially launching in Jakarta today. The company has actually been in operating in the city since early June, giving residents a taste of what the company is offering. Over the past two months it’s been working on building up its inventory of cars and drivers through partnerships with car rental companies and gauging the market demand, pattern, not to mention reception in Indonesia’s capital. For the time being, the service is available in very limited capacity as pick ups are concentrated around the Sudirman CBD area.

On Sunday Indonesians on Twitter discovered that Telkom Indonesia had begun to block access to video site Vimeo. While the block doesn’t seem to be affecting all customers, a number of complaints had arose and the move was confirmed by Telkom CIO and director of innovation and IT solutions and strategic portfolio Indra Utoyo.

Partnership Crucial to Success of Open Government Initiatives

On April 26-27, DailySocial, Southeast Asia Technology Transparency Initiative (SEATTI), World Wide Web Foundation (WWWF), and the government of Jakarta, held HackJak, a 24 hour competition challenging software developers in Indonesia to create software-based solutions to assist in solving the issues plaguing Jakarta. The city, as well as the central government through UKP4, provided data sets for developers to build upon. The event attracted 200 registrants with over 50 solutions offered.

On Thursday night I was invited to an impromptu meet up with Twitter’s head of content for APAC and EMEA Christel Quek. She was in town to give a presentation at SES Conference during the day and wanted to feel the pulse of the Indonesian social media scene with a number of local bloggers. There were talks of regional programming, Twitter’s reach, and something about an office.
