Indonesian government threatens RIM with additional taxes over Malaysia decision

If you had been following my tweets yesterday or read the news online elsewhere you would have known that the Indonesian government is planning to exact revenge on Research In Motion for setting up manufacturing operations in Malaysia by imposing additional tax on imported BlackBerry devices.

Indonesia and its government has long held strong animosity towards Malaysia despite or perhaps due to the shared heritage and culture. Claims of theft over cultural aspects and the arts have long been a sore point between the two countries and this latest decision by RIM only adds to that long list of reasons.

Indonesia is a massive market for RIM. Its one of the few countries in the world (if not the only one) in which BlackBerry devices outsell both iPhone and Android phones combined. The BlackBerry in this country is not seen as a business device but instead it is primarily a social device.

About Google’s Investment in Indonesia

With the revelation that Google is planning to open an office in Indonesia, a lot of the talk has been about how it would be beneficial for them to do so, but many of the arguments I see on a number of blogs, news articles and on Twitter show a misunderstanding of benefits.

Most highlighted the argument that Google as a corporation would be more accessible to Indonesians, that it would be able to do more direct interaction with Indonesia and understand the market a lot better. After all, Indonesia’s 230 million people is the fifth largest in the world and with only 40-odd million internet users it’s a market that can’t be ignored.

The Treehouse: Internet Hopes and Hypes

Puff Doggy by Daniel Peacock[Editor’s note: The infamous Treespotter has always been an astute and sharp observer of what is going on in Indonesia. Beginning today, The Treehouse at DailySocial will be host to Treespotter’s public thoughts and remarks with regards to technology, enterprise, startups, and the media. As Treespotter is not an employee of DailySocial his views and comments may not necessarily reflect that of DailySocial. Regardless, we are thrilled to have his column. Welcome to The Treehouse.]

There’s an interesting piece from the BBC – on Google’s increased attention on Asia – the shifting gravity as BBC puts it. The article itself didn’t mention Indonesia, it was mostly about China. Google got kicked out of China for doing the right thing. For many foreign players, China is an increasingly competitive market, true on the internet just as it’s true in textile: China now outsource clothes manufacturing to Vietnam. If you think textile was worrying, this is a whole different league.

Incubator and VC’s Complaint on Indonesian Startups Readiness

For the past few months big groups are penetrating investment on tech startups in Indonesia, even companies from Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, China, and US  are slowly trying out Indonesian startups market. Most of them are financial company ready to invest Indonesian “sizzling” tech startups.

Unfortunately, some unprepared startups have disappointed the investors the moment they met. The startups are too infatuated with the term “Romanticism of Silicon Valley” – like Budi Putra said.

You have brilliant idea, find a co-founder, funded by investors, acquired by Google, and become ultra rich with outstanding reputation and perhaps a red Ferarri in the garage. And life is beautiful.

What’s in Investors’ Mind: Data and Research

On Echelon 2011, one of panel discussions talked about investors. The theme is always interesting or at least can bring a good discussion.

What’s in investor’s mind became the main question, especially for startup that needs funding and been wondering how investors think of a startup and what are the considerations before they fund any startup.

Panelist of  Willson Cuaca – East Ventures, James Chan – Neoteny Labs, Tuff Yen – Seraph Group dan William Klippgen – Tigers Capital exposed many interesting things, and there are at least two things that interested me, data and research.
