For enabler players who have expanded their services to fulfillment systems, there are TokoTalk, Sirclo, GudangAda, and Jet Commerce. How These Early-Stage Startups Can Survive Despite Pandemic

There are many reasons why startups in the early stages have so many difficulties. Obstacles in finding the right talent, building solid team communication, product exploration, also penetration on the target market.

During this pandemic, these obstacles converge to several more fundamentals. Maintaining cash flow and seeking new funding to secure business continuity are two of them.

We spoke with three startups in the early phase (seed) to find out tips and strategies for dealing with this pandemic. They generally don’t have the flexibility of a more mature startup. However, it is not impossible. They have taken various initiatives to survive this abnormal situation.

Focus not only to a single market

It still remains the memory of the early months when the pandemic hit so many businesses until some are collapsed. The sectors most affected, such as hospitality, restaurants, import-export logistics, transportation, experienced the hardest hit. Large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) to reduce the level of transmission of the outbreak forced the sector to hold back for a while.

Stoqo is one of the victims. The discontinuity of thousands of restaurants and shopping centers caused their income to drop significantly. Stoqo announced shutdown in April.

Startup Izy.ai, which business is closely related to hospitality, learned from this situation. The CEO, Gerry Mangentang does not want the startup he founded to have the same fate.

Izy started its operation in 2018, relies on the sustainability of hotels and accommodations. Its platform helps hotels and accommodations digitize services and increase guests. Gerry realized that his party could not continue to rely solely on the hospitality business. Moreover, the local situation indicates that the pandemic will last longer.

“We have to pivot into another direction and must not depend only on accommodations. We have plans to enter the residential and retail [markets],” Gerry said.

Izy’s core business actually lies in fulfilling the digitization of hotel services through a subscription model. Services such as ordering food in the hotel, room service, laundry, and others. With the same principle, they are trying to open new markets by penetrating modern retail and residential settlements.

“We are an on-demand platform, with this retail we can be considered light e-commerce, but for malls and retail. The focus will be on Jakarta, Bandung, and Bali,” Gerry added.

Efficiency and other initiatives

If Izy decided to pivot in order to survive this crisis, Crowde and Doogether prefer efficiency strategy.

Crowde’s Head of Impact Investment, Afifa Urfani admitted, at the beginning of the pandemic, her team experienced a strong impact in order to survive until public acceptance of its products. Therefore, Afifa thought Crowde is more selective with every step of the way.

“We chose to slow down, to speed up later,” she said.

Crowde carefully calculates the costs in and out of the company, tightens expenses, and changes the company’ss culture to do all its activities digitally. This method is the compensation that Crowde chose, therefore the acquisition and maintenance process of their capital project continues.

Crowde’s core business is actually capital risk control in the agricultural sector. Since the pandemic began, Afifa said the company has made several initiatives to adjust to the situation. One of these initiatives is to link market access with tonnage purchases.

“What is different is that in the past we focused on the hospitality business (hotels, restaurants, cafes/catering), now we are open to multi-layer market potential,” she added.

Doogether has similar strategies. The wellness platform fronted by Fauzan Gani admits Doogether has made many adjustments to expenses.

From an initiative aspect, Doogether focuses on enriching its service features. One of them is by launching a live streaming-based class to be ordered through the application. This strategic step was taken to target people who now exercise more at home.

“In addition, we also add a verification feature for our partners who have opened their facilities and comply with the SOP from the government,” Doogether’s CEO, Fauzan Gani said.

New funding is still an option

Extending the runway is the focus of all startups in these situations. Apart from previous strategies, funding is a clearly available option. However, funding is not an easy choice because it involves many other factors.

Fauzan said that the obstacle to raising a new funding round is the unstable economic situation in Indonesia. He thought, the availability of vaccines is hope for getting out of the pandemic crisis and the adoption of the community for the industry they are in.

Fauzan admitted that his team had no plans to raise new funds. He believes the Doogether runway is still sufficient to survive the pandemic crisis since they have succeeded in getting extension funding from its investors.

“However, as a startup, we must always be ready for a new round of funding,” he said.

Afifah has quite similar answer. Attracting investors for new funding is clearly more challenging. That’s why deploying Series A funding is the second priority. Crowde’s first priority, she mentioned, is to optimize the scheme and business model in order to finance operational expenses, even though the profits they earned were thin.

We strongly believe that the runway is still long enough to survive the company, Crowde is determined to get through this crisis with their own business.

“Certainly our choice is to run a healthy business in order to ensure investment possibilities,” Afifa said.

Meanwhile, Izy is racing against time. The recent seed funding gave them a one-year runway. With hospitality and accommodation conditions still far from normal, their pivot plan will play a big role in the company’s future.

Fulfillment Feature Becomes TokoTalk’s Next Innovation

TokoTalk, a startup with an e-commerce website builder service, has officially launched its latest feature, fulfillment. This feature is expected to facilitate users in terms of logistics management. What makes this feature superior is the delivery of goods from multiple locations and pickup service from the seller’s location.

Tokotalk’s Head of Business Development, Kemas Antonius explained, the latest feature will also include the provision of warehouse storage and packaging of goods in collaboration with several partners. There are three old players engaged in fulfillment and warehouse services who will be invited to work together.

“It is expected that business players who use TokoTalk will no longer need to consider logistical operational issues. Starting from the order process, stock management, packaging, to delivery and couriers, especially when facing a massive order. They just sit back and focus on thinking about sales strategies,” Kemas said.

Part of the innovation series

As of August 2020 TokoTalk claims to have succeeded in getting 320 thousand business people who have created online stores through its platform. Growth reaches 30% every month. It is also said that their GMV will reach $10 million or equivalent of 148 billion Rupiah by the end of this year.

“The target is to strengthen our system in order to reach more business players or brands to join TokoTalk. We want to become a sustainable all-in-one solution platform for online business people. We want to create an ecosystem that can synergize with mutual cooperation,” Kemas added.

This fulfillment feature is not the single concern of TokoTalk. Logistics performance has long been in the spotlight of a number of players in the e-commerce industry. Big players such as Tokopedia and Bukalapak both have initiatives to improve the quality of their logistics. After all, as a seller, the 0n-time service is an essential feature.

TokoTalk has been operating since 2018. In April 2019 they have secured funding of IDR 45 billion. At that time, their focus was on service improvement and business growth.

Now, 2020 has started to enter the fourth quarter. They began to present a series of innovations as a form of commitment to improving the service quality. This fulfillment service doesn’t seem to be the last. Kemas said that they are currently developing another system and are ready to collaborate with various parties. Andy Zain on His Venture to Build a Sustainable Ecosystem for Tech Business

For almost 20 years, Andy has been a serial entrepreneur, an executive, an advisor & involved in setting up businesses for several high growth startups and work with global brand clients such as Disney Mobile, Yahoo! Mobile, Cartoon Network, EA Games, and Gameloft for their go-to-market efforts to Southeast Asia.

He is now the Managing Partner of Kejora Ventures, a growth stage venture capital firm based in Southeast Asia. Prior to launching Kejora, he held a position as Director in SkyBee Tbk, an Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX) listed company in the technology, media & telecommunication sector.

As an ecosystem person, Andy Zain is quite active in mentoring and supporting accelerator programs. He believes our nation’s talents are capable not only to create a high-profile and profitable company but also something that can transform our country into a better future.

Recently, the DailySocial team involved in a casual-yet-thorough discussion with Andy Zain, here’s what we can share:

First, let’s talk about your passion for the tech industry. Aside from being a full-time serial entrepreneur and investor, you’re also actively involved in mentoring activities. Why are you being so eager about this?

Since the beginning, I always like to distribute my thoughts. Every knowledge I gained, I am very eager to share it with people. It’s always a pleasure to have been trusted as a mentor in a well-organized acceleration or incubation program. In fact, this is also my way to exchange insights with those in various kinds of industry, since we’ll be meeting people with diverse backgrounds.

I come from the mobile industry, which penetration has been quite strong before the tech industry boom. We did a lot of partnerships and collaborations, meet all kinds of people from various countries, involved in many projects with local and global institutions. Therefore, it is right to say I made quite an abundance of networks. In fact, my passion is always to build strong-willed and high-integrity resources.

I always believe in a quote in Stan Lee’s novel that says “with great power, comes great responsibilities.”. Indonesia is granted with over 200 million population, and we have more than enough to build a more sustainable ecosystem for digital talents and tech business that affects the nation’s acceleration.

For that purpose, it is necessary that we, as an early-believer of the industry, support those highly-motivated tech enthusiasts in achieving their goals through our experience. In this dynamic industry, sometimes the problem is not with the market or potential, but the maturity stage along with powerful networks. The last two mostly happen to early-stage startups. It is also one of the reasons I survived with the Founder’s Institute for 9 years until many accelerator programs rise with more competency and capabilities.

How do you see the accelerator programs encourage the business ecosystem growth in general? Also, a bit from the investor perspective.

As I’ve mentioned, there are already so many accelerator programs nowadays, however some are not even organized by tech-driven entrepreneurs. In other words, it is only to satisfy a craving for the latest trends. I’m not saying all accelerator programs, but we have to be really selective. When the program was held by a competent organizer, I believe the results will turn out great.

I, myself, is an ecosystem person. I believe, in order to be successful, we have to deeply root in the ecosystem. I used to a big believer in the mobile industry. When I first started in the business, we have no network, however, I tried many ways to build one. First, through the community, Mobile Monday, one of the biggest tech communities in Indonesia. As I moderate people sharing their big ideas, networking is going well. From mobile to the internet and now the startup ecosystem. The industry needs these kinds of resources, a powerful ecosystem, and connections.

Many startup founders are too ambitious, to the extent they might be ruined themselves, in other ways exploited their consumers. Again, with great power comes great responsibilities. It is our responsibility to create an example for the next generation not only aims for numbers but to make something that can transform our nation. We have all the access to a mentor, also as venture capital has access to funding.

What kind of factors do you think that shapes great founders? Do you think Entrepreneurship was born or build?

I believe that people are born with different characters, and there are characteristics that make them more effective entrepreneurs. Excessive fear or insecurity will not help you in the process of building a venture. Also, reckless people can fall effortlessly in this industry. What I’m saying is, there are people who are born with supporting characters for entrepreneurial. Some maybe not, but they can work harder through some process.

What we are looking in great founders are integrity, maturity (some are delivered through the process), and expertise. In terms of chemistry and connection, we can work it out.

Do you think people without a background in technology science can succeed in the tech industry?

Don’t look at the tech industry as something different, that it is exclusively made only for those people who understand technology science and do coding. A startup is a new way to do business, the tech industry is a whole new journey. Just because you can’t code, doesn’t mean it’s impossible for you to build a venture. You still have much homework in order to understand the industry. Don’t be too obsessed with the technology, but also focus on the business, how to be able to run the business more efficiently through connectivity.

Before entering the investment industry, you have cofounded a company, also involved as a venture leader. What actually happens to your previous ones?

I started working since 19, for 12 years I worked with only one supervisor. I learned so much in the meantime. In my 30’s I decided to have something that can be entitled to my name. I cofounded Elasitas, a provider of integrated solutions for telecommunication and information marketplace focused on next-generation Mobile and Internet technologies combined with extensive R&D. Along the way, the mobile content which first intended as information on demand started to shift and misimplemented. After that, I leave to run another venture named SkyBee, which eventually becomes an Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX) listed company in the technology, media & telecommunication sector.

Actually, the first Internet startup which I’m heavily involved in is eTravel8. It is an ambitious project at the time, a partnership of 8 travel agents in Indonesia to allow the first online ticket sales for the travel industry. To include live booking, ahead of everyone in the market. When e-tickets are still pretty much unknown.

Lesson learned, no matter how good is your execution, if the market is not ready, don’t force it. Fast forward 11 years later then we saw the birth of Tiket.com, followed by Traveloka.

What encourages you to start a venture capital? How is it, the early days of Kejora?

It was when I still actively mentoring and supporting launching for startups. My friend, Sebastian (another partner of Kejora), has just got back from the US. He said, why you always help others in terms of building venture, why not make one yourself?

I started Kejora in 2014. We’re started small with $2 million, a little bit more to $7 million, improved to $34 million, until we manage $200 million. It’s the process and we grow day by day. We try to make something that is not only commercial but also impactful.

When I started Kejora, we’re deeply rooted in the industry. Starting from the Founder’s Institute, ideabox [with Indosat], and many more in the long journey. Kejora might not have many portfolios, but we invest thick. We invested in a startup as early, involved as much in the growing. Yes, we are very hands-on with portfolios. We’re doing as close to a venture builder. We really believe the ecosystem will help, by working closely with the portfolio.

In terms of preference, we only invest in what we believe has great potential and where we can offer a real solution. There are two things founders must have expertise in the related sector, and some criteria that need time to build, such as network and reputation. The second is what we can use to support them. We’re trying to build an ecosystem here. It’s hard to find a great founder in one look, that is why we prefer to see the industry demand first.

Speaking of the pandemic, what was your first thought when the Covid-19 spread? Does it affect your company in a significant way? How about your portfolios?

We are quite grateful for the numbers of Kejora’s portfolios which are around 30. Our philosophy is not looking for what hype, it is to build something the market really needs. Kejora portfolios are rarely involving fancy technology or sophisticated branding. For example, we invest in fintech that helps people borrow money to run their business, logistics, and more primary necessity. A field that affects the lives of many people. That is why one-third of our portfolios are flying high. 20-30% are affected but still manageable.

It’s been over a decade you’ve been actively contributed to the tech industry, what is the biggest lesson learned during the journey?

I owe it to all my friends in the tech industry. Our consistency to treat and help each other is what keeps me survived in this dynamic industry. We’re living in an industry that always pioneering. Suppose we enter the world of the jungle, there will always be new and unexpected challenges. However, the power of networks can always help through the most difficult time.

You are quite experienced as a leader, what can you say to the founders experiencing a difficult time during this pandemic? How do you see our tech investment landscape will be after (if) the crisis end?

As people who have been granted with digital power, we should be very optimistic. Once everything recovers and research must start from scratch, there will be another world to overcome. We need to be ready when this time is coming. People are currently in a difficult situation, we are the most competent ones. We have channels to communicate, big data to analyze, we have this great power.

For people in the digital industry, use this power for good deeds. Now the burden passed, we need to create more powerful solutions to everyday problems. I am very excited to see how this will turn out. We, as Kejora, has prepared loads of funding, in order to fuel the upcoming wave of tech giants in this country.

Mola TV Stories: English Premier League and Its Mission with Local Content

Mola TV has been established since mid-2019, is a subsidiary of the Djarum Group which operates under the Polytron electronic device factory. Its business model is quite unique, combining cable television, IPTV, and video-on-demand. At the beginning, it’s quite captivating due to the exclusive airing of the Premier League.

DailySocial had the opportunity to have a discussion with Mola TV representative, Mirwan Suwarso, to explore the company’s vision and strategy. It is interesting because Mola rises in the middle of a competitive streaming service industry.

To begin with, Mirwan said, “We see the ball as a spear to introduce Mola and his long-term mission. Let people know first. And as time goes by, Mola is quite different after the pandemic. More new content is being displayed.”

When starting the Mola application, on a cellphone, website, or a smart television device, it is true that the content served is quite diverse. At first, other videos seemed to be complementary, but now it’s getting increased by time.

“Before the pandemic, the team focused on the soccer promotion, because the interest is high. There has not been any thought to extend content options. During the pandemic, we immediately reversed our mindset, especially when the football match was stopped, previously other content was only complementary, then it was designed to be the main show,” Mirwan explained.

Actually, what Mola has right now is plans for the next three to four years. The business model is executed faster than the timeline previously prepared. Since the pandemic, Mola “forced” all of its viewers to subscribe to access its content. Interestingly, Mirwan said, his customer statistics actually increased by 3 times, although he did not provide details on the exact number.

Local content

It was further explained, although football broadcasts had stopped, the increase in subscribers was mostly driven by local content, especially those targeting housewives and children. The Mola team is quite observant, because when the PSBB was implemented in various regions, people at home needed alternative content – both entertainment and education.

“From the beginning, the selection of content for children was more of an activity. For example, learning science together, making crafts, making experiments. It turns out positive for most people, therefore, we enrich the content. Then, we see that some Indonesians are in line with our mission to empower the nation,” he continued.

Many contents are self-produced, such as the one entitled “Sofa Kuning” which is included in the Mola Kids category. It is a family event featuring Indonesian children’s songs rearranged according to today’s musical tastes. The content is packaged in the form of karaoke and educational quizzes with prizes to be present through the Mola application. Also, we collaborate with NET TV for broadcasting. Here, the objective is quite noble, Mola wants to make Indonesian children more familiar with their nationality – “How many children now know the song Baby Shark better than Burung Kutilang ?,” Mirwan mentioned.

In its production, Mola collaborates with vocational schools owned by Djarum. For example, SMK in Kudus has a concentration in animation and design.

“Mola wants to connect all of that into something that moves society. Mola was born to deliver that. However, if Mola starts from there, people won’t be interested. Therefore, we have to make people interested first, get to know first, that’s why the Premier League is in.”

Regarding football, he also emphasized that Mola did not stop there, they positioned the channel different from beIN Sport, FOX, or ESPN. The company feels required to contribute for Indonesia, then, it is realized through the “Dream Chasers Garuda Select” event. The company selected 24 young players from various regions in Indonesia (under 20 years) to be brought to Europe and coached for 8 months, therefore, they can start a more serious career in football. The show at Mola takes the form of a documentary of their journey.

“In the first year we found a player from Sorong named Braif Fatari, he did not belong to any PSSI club. We brought him to Europe [..] he is now playing for Persija and for the U-20 national team. That means we have involved in the fate of a person, the question is, can we did that to more people? This is still homework to work on. Hopefully one day, in the international leagues there will be players from Indonesia who contribute to the big clubs,” Mirwan said.

Mola’s program categories

Apart from content on Mola Kids, there are several other categories. One that is being developed is Mola Living. It contains exclusive content for families. Again, Mola emphasizes the “education” element in his series. For example, the program “Blusukan Butet Kertaradjasa”, which airs inspirational stories from people with great life experiences – one of them in the episode entitled “Farmers of the City”, there is a story of a former bankrupt gambler who is now successfully cultivating a kale plantation in Tangerang.

“If other people create infotainment in order to explore celebrities’ romance, we try to take another side. For example, in the ‘Musafir Malam’ program, Iwa K tries to explore the other side of characters who have interacted with the dark world, such as having been in prison, to gain lessons from the experience,” Mirwan explained. “There is also a ‘Cooking Impossible’ program, for the first time Farah Quinn comes out of her comfort zone, she cooks with her 2-year-old child. However, her cooking fails, you’ll get messed up by a 2-year-old child. But mothers experience situations like that. Funny, entertaining, and relate to the lives of many people. ”

In addition, Mola also airs Movies, News, Sports content, and most recently they also provide shows from HBO GO. The collaboration with HBO GO was only announced in early September 2020.

“HBO is proven to produce quality content. In addition, we also want to have the highest benchmark (for content). One of our conditions for the collaboration is that we will work together to produce joint content [..] Therefore, we want to bring the concept of our (local) program to the world through the channels owned by HBO,” he said.

Believe in local content

Analyzing Mola’s mission above, it is quite visible with Mola’s ambition towards local content. They have also started to collaborate with creators in Indonesia. It’s just the beginning, one of them with Lifelike Pictures in the middle of making two series comedy and drama genre; and it’s open for more local studios.

His optimism for local content is also quite “brave” amid the strike of many foreign films and series presented through various platforms. Mirwan does not deny this fact.

“Those who like soap operas will watch soap operas, those who enjoy Korean drama will always be happy with it. We never force it, but what we are trying to do is that the quality of our content must be as good as them (from the outside). I have never forgotten the movie Berbagi Suami, Sherina’s Adventure, AADC that can make people like Indonesian films when everyone is talking about foreign films. We should make something like that,” Mirwan emphasized.

With the 3 time increase in customers during the pandemic, Mola expects his strategy is well validated and the company is in the right direction.

Another unique fact is that Mola also sells streaming devices made by Polytron. It allows the television to broadcast on-demand and live shows on Mola TV. Regarding this, Mirwan emphasized the Mola TV company is under Polytron. This platform is actually designed to make local electronic device manufacturers can compete in the smart TV market.

“All smart TVs were making effort to have Netflix, Disney+; it is our idea to present a difference. Therefore, a Mola Streaming Device was made to be complementary and expected to become a joint force in order to become a superior local product. It is one of the strategies,” Mirwan concluded.
